I've noticed recently that when my friends are watching Netflix it'll tell me the title of what they are watching. I remember a couple years ago Netflix got into HUGE trouble when they changed their algorithm and users could see other users' queue. I'm pretty sure it resulted in a lawsuit, but I'm having trouble finding the article.
Most of the time when I have a friend watching Netflix I only see that red Netflix cover. However I have a few friends that I can see the movie. I currently don't use Netflix so I'm not aware of their features, but I'm pretty sure you should have this as on optional feature.
Find the 'My Xbox' tab on your dashboard then click the window w/your gamertag and gamerscore. Scroll over to 'Online Safety' and choose to change the setting. Click 'Customize' and scroll down to video and music status. If your friends can see your video status then the current setting should be 'Everyone', switch it to blocked.
Your friends should now only see "Watching a movie" when they see you online. And regarding the queue, I've never been able to see anyone's queue, only that they're browsing it. You can only see the movie they're watching, granted they have their settings adjusted to allow it.
It's just a privacy thing, not even a concern. I'm part of the school of thought that not everyone needs to know what I'm doing/where I am all the time. I don't think it's weird that I don't think everyone on my friends list should see what I'm watching, or that I don't necessarily need to check in on Foursquare of Facebook every place I go. I don't have 1200 photos on my Facebook, nor do I announce when I'm on the toilet via Twitter. Not for any particular reason, just cause I don't. Some people do and while I don't think it's weird, I just don't do it. Just like the people that are critical of privacy don't concern themselves with what they're sharing. Just thoughts. I'm not judgmental.
AWWW! I thought this was going to be a thread where I could tell everyone I just finished watching Battlestar: Galactica seasons 1-4. Or maybe I would tell everyone how I'm a big Kung-fu flick lover and how Jackie Chan's old school films are some of my favorites.
i dont mind. i think i have mine set for anyone to see. doesnt really bother me and it saves me the "whatareyouwatchinnn?" question. If netflix had a buttload of porn im pretty sure people wouldnt like the feature. xP

i know it used to be so it would say "Watching (whatever you're watching) in Netflix" etc. but now, whether its allowed or blocked, it only says "Watching a tv show in Netflix". is there a way to still actually get it to say the show you're watching? if not, what's the point of this option, and why haven't they gotten rid of it.
Your right, its pointless. If your watching a DVD or listening to a CD it just says watching movie/listening to music. They should give you the option like they do on Youtube to show others what your watching/listening to.
Same thing goes for netflix i guess.. (wouldnt really know how it works since we dont have it in Australia) but im guessing if it just says your watching a TV show or Movie they thought it was redundant... maybe its just extra effort they cbf giving a name to the thing your watching
I suppose it's so people can choose whether they want their friends or random people seeing what they are watching/listening too; Sky, Netflix, LAST.fm etc. I have it set at the moment to people seeing, but they can't actually see what I'm listening to or watching.
If they changed it so that you could see exactly what they're watching/listening to I would change the settings to private, too many people who I know would start sending me messages saying 'I like that band/artist!' or 'What's that movie/show about?' -_-
Understanding stuff fail...OP is saying that whatever the settings are, no-one sees what you are watching/listening to, which means that having a setting for it is pointless. It used to say what you were watching I think, ie "Davi3s Lar is watching An Awesome Movie on Netflix" when you allowed it to and it doesn't anymore. I agree the privacy setting is pretty much redundant now, but I'm not too arsed. Don't know why they changed it.
yeah you're really the only one who understood. to everyone else, it DOESN'T SAY "Watching Tinkerbell" or whatever you guys used as an example. whether the setting is "Allowed" or "Blocked" it just says "Watching a video" either way.
so LaBamba, if im understanding you correctly, allowed would say "Watching a tv show on Netflix" and blocked would just say "Watching a video". is that what you're saying? the "allowed" selection just shows the app now? instead of the individual title?
Just wanted to point it out. Currently it just says 'watching a show' or 'listening to music' etc if you set it to allow in the privacy settings, it doesn't show anything at all if you put disallow (I don't think, but I've never tried it).
But what I did say is that if they did have this option like the OP mentioned then I wouldn't want people to see that I was watching 'insert show here' or listening to 'insert musician here'. I find it better as it is, not letting people know exactly what you're up to.
that same option used to say the exact tv show/movie before the new dashboard update. i used to scroll my friends list and see "Watching Breaking Bad on Netflix" or "Watching Community on Hulu Plus". it never worked for dvds or video files though. only through video apps like that. and once the new dashboard update happened it switched to just "Watching a video".
Hi, for the past week the xbox apple tv app keeps crashing. I reinstalled, relogged in and it worked and then right after shutting the xbox down and starting the xbox, the app is back to it's crashing ways. Anyone else seeing this ?
Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities! We understand you're having trouble with the Apple TV app on your Xbox. We want to make sure you can enjoy streaming the latest content and would be happy to lend a hand!
To clarify, have you checked to make sure you're using the latest software and app versions for your console? If not, give this a try first, then continue with the troubleshooting steps recommended for Apple TV app issues found below:
I'm having the same problem on my xbox one S. after installing it, I can register and use it but when I close the app or restart the xbox, the Apple TV+ app crashes and shuts down. Other streaming apps such as Netflix, Hulu and Vudu are running well. I am also using the latest version of both xbox firmware and Apple TV+ app. So far I've tried uninstalling and installing the app 4 times already.
Same issue for me, though uninstalling and reinstalling do nothing to change what happens each time... I launch and the app throws the Apple TV logo full screen, thinks for a moment, then crashes back to my XBox menu.
I changed my Xbox one s to a series X. It worked well as long it was preloaded. As soon as I turned the console off the same issue came up again. Apple has never been good with apps running in other OS. Hope there is a fix soon becasue it was running at 120p and the screen looked awesome!
Hi Eric - XBOX is updated and I dont see any updates for the Apple app so I presume it is the latest and the greatest. We need to install the app, watch something and then the next time the app crashes once again - so we need to reinstall, rinse and repeat the entire process.
Yes, the AppleTV+ app on Xbox is a total disaster and Apple really doesn't seem to care much. Not the first time Apple has ignored buggy software. What I really can't stand is that companies waste huge amounts of their customers' time troubleshooting these problems rather than coming clean and admitting that it's their own fault.
This issue is persistent, and has been going on too long to believe Apple have any intention of fixing it. It's a typical Apple strategy to ignore problems on non-apple hardware to sell more of their own devices. It is a shameful practice for a hardware company, but it has been at the core of their strategy for decades now.
Does anyone know if the Xbox One is on the Smartthings roadmap? I see lots of conversions from 2014 but not this year. It seems like a good integration when you play netflix, Amazon or DVD that the lights set correctly in the room you are watching.
Any news here?
It does look like that at a minimum, you should be able to set up some REST endpoints. But you would probably have to have the app actively running. The second you start watching Netflix or playing a game it would put the process to sleep
Along your using ir concept, I have been toying with the Anyhome ir blaster to control an Xbox One. The setup is a Virtual switch read by Sharptools in Tasker which uses the Anymotes plugin to send a command to the xbox. As long as the Anymote device is properly aligned it works well.
