Hey friends! I received a small tesla coil for Christmas today (Joytech Bluetooth SSTC SS02) and it is an impressive device. But it seems to be a Chinese device that works differently than the onetelsa I am familiar with. It is a Bluetooth-enabled device where a square wave mp3 song is sent to the device. They included about a dozen or two songs but they are all pretty lame and I can't find any square wave songs.
Last year I was excited to get a Bluetooth tesla coil for Christmas! I am trying to remember what brand I got, but I know many identical coils are sold under different brand names. The coil comes with a USB drive of terrible songs. It was disappointing to be so close to greatness by having a fantastic piece of technology but no ability to play your own songs. The instructions vaguely state that "square wave" files are required. After digging, I found a way to make or convert your own songs.

First, I want to talk about the oneTesla community. OneTesla makes tesla coil kits, and it makes up a fantastic group of people. Their coils use MIDI file formats, and the coils have a chip (or something I don't know what I am talking about) that converts the MIDI file to the square wave file. So, we can play OneTesla MIDI songs on our tesla coil if we convert them to a square wave format. I'll talk more about this later. The oneTesla forum page is a great way to find pre-optimized songs for tesla coils. If a song plays well on a oneTesla, it will likely play well on one of these pre-built Bluetooth ones. Here is a link to the oneTesla forum.
If you search the forum for specific song titles or even generic phrases like "song dump" or "collection," you will find a list of MIDI songs that can be converted to play on the tesla coil. These songs simply need to be converted to a square wave format. Fortunately, an amazing person has already made an online tool that does this! Here is the link. I take no credit for this work.
But what if you can't find the song you are looking for on the oneTesla website? Fortunately, the internet is full of MIDI versions of many popular songs! However, I learned the hard way that 99% of MIDI songs from the internet are simply too complicated to play well on a tesla coil. Instead, what you need to do is simplify the MIDI file and remove anything that is not the main melody. Background melodies and tunes will overwhelm the coil and give you a bunch of static. Instead, you can use Midi editor to remove any extra notes.
This is a free piece of software that is easy to use. I have absolutely zero musical talent, but even I could figure things out. You can start removing notes through trial and error until only the core notes remain. Additionally, any songs that are too low (maybe the key is too low? Or perhaps the octave is too low? Again, I really don't know what I am talking about) will not play well on the tesla coil resulting in a lot of static. To fix this, you can select all of the notes in the midi file and drag them up a full octave (I think that's the right word). Doing this made some of my songs go from unplayable to complete perfection.
Well as you saw in the video, typical Tesla coils like oneTesla generate sound and music by interrupting the output arcs at a given frequency, usually programmed by a micro controller. If you like to see my videos on oneTesla and how it works, here they are:
It is an SSTC Bluetooth Music Tesla Coil. Every time the Tesla coil discharges, the air vibrates. When the frequency of the discharge changes, the frequency of the vibration also changes, resulting in different tones. An ordinary spark gap Tesla coil can't do it.
Generally, a solid-state Tesla coil is used. There is an arc extinguishing circuit board that controls the Tesla coil. Through that circuit board, the frequency of discharge can be controlled. If the music signal is input, the music will be released.
4.How to play:
1>.Prepare the square wave music in your phone.
2>.Plug the power adapter and Bluetooth switch.
3>.Connect the Bluetooth to your phone.
4>.Play music.
5>.Adjust the volume and frequency potentiometer to adjust the playback effect.
WARNING: Tesla coil will interfere with electronic products when working, which is the characteristic of Tesla coil itself. So, please don't let your phone get close to the tesla coil to avoid damage. This model is specially design for square wave music. It can only play square wave music, and perfect good. You can search and download the square wave music online.
Second one i ordered and it came once again well packaged and undamaged. I need more because for good sound it is best to put one voice in the device. So you need one coil for every instrument or voice you use. If you do it like this you will be surprised of the sound quality. Also if you put a 12v bulb from a car on the top, the arcs will come out of the bulb and produce even better sound. I guess it has something to do with acoustics from the lightbulb body. Arcs can be touched in interuppter mode. In Music mode they can hurt because of the music frequency so better not touch when playing music :) Also this coil can light bulbs in a way i have never seen with other coils. This design operates at a much higher frequency then a regular sstc. I guess that will be the reason.
First of all the coil looks and feels very good. The interrupter is also very good and for the size of the coil it produces big arcs (20 cm is accurate). I ordered a second one because for me the best feature is, i can plug a synthesizer into it and get incredible good sound out of it. If you just play some music files it will sound horrible If you put one voice or instrument into it you can make it sound very good. You can adjust volume with the duty cycle pot. On max duty cycle it is really loud. I made some coils myself but for this price, the quality and features this is a bargain. Also packaging was solid and came undamaged so everything ok on that too. I ran it for an hour on the synthesizer and it has not shut off. Not much heating. Electronics look and prove solid. Really awesome stuff! Recommended!
Great little device! Its a ton of fun at home and in the classroom, though it is loud at full power.
I've spent hours experimenting "Playing" with this device and I haven't had any issues. It comes at a great price with two different attachments. Other shippers like amazon offer the same product for the same price with only the one attachment.'
The electrical arcs are also fun to touch and are not painful.
The Bluetooth function is fun but more of a gimmick in my opinion. Some songs do sound a lot better than others even when you are not listening to square wave music so don't limit yourself to just that. In some songs words can sometimes be heard as well though keep in mind this device has no speaker all sounds come from the electrical arcs.
Overall this is an absolutely amazing device and I would definitely recommend it to others.
When people modulate their tesla coils to play music, it sounds like a very sharp square wave, as opposed to the electrical signal, a (roughly) sine wave. Why doesn't the tesla coil sound like a sine wave, which would match the electrical signal?
This modulation is done using an "interrupter", which turns the coil on and off at the right frequencies to generate the notes. The output of the interrupter is a square wave. The output from the topload is sinusoidal, but the frequency of each burst is too high for the human ear to perceive. Therefore you only hear the output from the interrupter.
