Only Similarity Check members benefit from this tailored iThenticate experience that includes read-only access to the full text of articles in the Similarity Check database for comparison purposes, discounted checking fees, and unlimited user accounts per organization.
If you participate in Similarity Check, not only do you get reduced rate access to iThenticate, but you also have the peace of mind of knowing that any similarity between your published content and manuscripts checked by other publishers will be flagged as a potential issue too.
My name is Azhar, a coordinator for two publishers in the Crossref DOI database. As one of the requirements in proposing the iThenticate similarity check, our journal website should be able to be indexed in the Turnitin database. For this reason, the Turnitin admin asked me to whitelist their IP address so that they could access my full-text URLs. They found that my site has received a timeout error indicating that it takes too long to download the articles. I have searched for it on Youtube, but I have yet to find it. Anybody could help me with how to whitelist an IP address?
If you do use this to compare versions of the same paper in order to see changes, do remember that this does count as a single document submission, so it will count towards your total of per-document checking fees.
Hi, we are adopting crossref DOIs, and we want to apply to similarity check service too.
To be eligible for the service, Crossref asks to begin registering content and including the full-text URL in metadata. Once that is done, then is possible to apply for the Similarity Check service, receive some iThenticate login, and then begin using the OJS iThenticate plugin to check the incoming manuscripts.
Question is: how OJS send to crossref (within the DOI deposit) the full-text URL needed to be eligible for similarity check? It is included in standard data send with crossref plugin? The OJS plagiarism plugin is needed only to check manuscripts?
We are using OJS 3.2.1.2
So how should editors approach similarity report review to ensure accuracy while maximizing efficiency? And what are the latest plagiarism software features users can leverage? To get answers to FAQs, we spoke with Fabienne Michaud, Product Manager at Crossref, who focuses on Similarity Check development. Similarity Check is built off of the newest version of iThenticate, iThenticate v2, which is currently only available to Similarity Check subscribers, making it the most advanced plagarism detection system available.
Crossref members interested in Similarity Check should know that to remain eligible for that service, they must include full-text Similarity Check URLs in the metadata of at least 90% of past and future Crossref Digital Object Identifier (DOI) deposits across their journal prefixes. That metadata is then indexed by Turnitin, helping to expand its content database and providing Similarity Check members peace of mind that any similarity between their content and manuscripts checked by other publishers will be flagged.
All journals should establish clear definitions for what they deem plagiarism versus acceptable cases of duplicate publication (e.g., preprints, if they allow posting). For more information on how to establish plagiarism detection policies and processes for addressing possible plagiarism, check out this Scholastica blog post and webinar on plagiarism detection best practices.
FM: Exclusions are for sections that can make a lot of noise in similarity reports that publishers may want to disregard across all of their journals or that editors may choose to disregard on a manuscript-by-manuscript basis at the report level. There are standard exclusion options like citations and quotes. You can also set custom exclusions with iThenticate v2 using standard section templates like acknowledgments and funding or by creating your own, which I think is a great feature to leverage. The options to exclude specified websites from all similarity reports and/or preprints are also new features available only with iThenticate v2. Whichever options you choose, there will obviously be an impact on your similarity score.
FM: By using the latest functionality within iThenticate v2, I think editors will save a lot of time. For example, with the new red flag feature, the software can detect characters in white ink to alert editors to authors trying to cheat the system. It would have missed that before because if something was disrupting a block of text, the system previously would not understand there was continuity and similarity. With the new red flag feature, iThenticate v2 can detect when authors have replaced Latin characters with Greek or Cyrillic characters also, for instance. Sometimes there is a clear intention to deceive, but sometimes it is simply a human error. So, again, the editors need to decide because the situation might not be immediately clear-cut.
Similarity checker helps you create original work and cite the work of others in your Word documents. The similarity checker shows you how much content in your document is original, and it makes it easy to insert citations when necessary. With the mechanics of citations taken care of, you are freed up to focus on your writing. Your reader can tell what material originates with you, and the people you cite get credit where it's due.
When the check is complete, Editor shows you how much of your content matches text that it found online (indicated as a percent), and the number of distinct passages in the document for you to review.
Journals subscribed to Scholastica's Peer Review System, and the latest version of Crossref Similarity Check (iThenticate V2) can turn on the new integration to generate similarity reports for all of their incoming submissions without any manual steps. When the integration is enabled, new manuscripts are sent to Similarity Check automatically at the end of the submission process. Each manuscript's resulting "Similarity Score" is displayed in Scholastica along with a link to the full text-overlap report, which includes links to all similar content identified.
Similarity Check gives Crossref members reduced-rate access to the iThenticate plagiarism detection tool from Turnitin, allowing them to check manuscripts for similarity to millions of documents in iThenticate's database of scholarly content to verify their originality. The latest version of iThenticate (V2) comes with a range of exciting new features, including improved preprint content identification and a new "red flag" feature that signals the detection of hidden text.
When a document is checked in Similarity Check, it is compared with the content of this database which is made up of published and unpublished documents, including over 40 million research articles, conference proceedings, and e-books from scientific, technical, and medical publishing. It includes material behind journal paywalls that would not be available from a simple internet search.
Similarity Check provides a similarity score, which indicates the total amount of text that matches text in other sources. There are two steps to using Similarity Check: (1) an automated step in which Similarity Check runs the online comparison; and (2) a manual step for someone in the Cochrane Review Group to interpret the report results and decide on next steps; see Table 2. These two steps combined can take from 5 minutes to 2 hours, but it is usually around 15 minutes. Similarity Check provides a list of resources for using the software: www.ithenticate.com/resources/customer-training/.
For further information on using Similarity Check, please see the official Similarity Check user manual (via TurnItin). For further information about the similarity score, see the iThenticate website.
This Similarity Check Document Viewer report shows the document being checked on the left side, highlighting matching text (in this example in red, blue and green), and the context of the matching text in the match document (Spirit MJ et al) on the right side. In this example the highlighted text in red and green match other sources than the text in blue and are not shown.
Similarity Check powered by iThenticate is an initiative started by Crossref to help its members actively engage in efforts to prevent scholarly and professional plagiarism. Although several plagiarism screening tools are already available, they are not well-suited to filtering academic content simply because they need access to the relevant full-text literature to screen. Similarity Check changes this by creating and continuously growing a database of current and archival scholarly literature. The "Similarity Check" logo reassures that the publisher whose content you are reading deposits into Similarity Check and is committed to publishing original research. Springer is offering the Crossref Similarity Check (powered by iThenticate) software to Journal Editors of Springer journals and Society & Publishing Partners journals to check an authored work against millions of other published scholarly articles, books, conference papers, dissertations, other academic content, and billions of web pages to ensure its originality. The web-based tool can be used in the editorial process to identify matching text but it cannot, on its own, identify plagiarism. Manual examination of the matching text is still required and judgment used to identify if plagiarism has occurred or not.

Thanks to its membership in Crossref, an official DOI registration agency, VSB-TUO can use a service for checking plagiarism, the so-called Similarity Check. This service uses the software iThenticate that verifies the authenticity of the checked texts against a worldwide database of more than 50 million texts (articles, books, dissertations and other academic content, millions of websites etc.)
