Note: As this is a list of anime series to watch, no anime movies were considered for this feature. This list applies to U.S. Netflix subscribers. Some titles may not currently be available on international platforms (yet). This list will also be periodically amended to remove series no longer available on Netflix, as well as add anime shows now available for streaming on the service.

This sci-fi story peels back the layers of a coming-of-age story to reveal a dystopian landscape that has no right to look this damn gorgeous while weaving a narrative that makes no effort to blunt its bleak and bloody edges. If extremely violent, over the top, and bombastic anime with a heavy 90s edge to both its character design and sense of humor is your jam, then 2022 juggernaut Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is calling your name.

Set in Germany, Monster follows brain surgeon Kenzo Tenma as his complicated work life unravels after he makes the fateful decision to operate on a young boy instead of the mayor. That choice sets in motion a chain of events that see Tenam ostracized, with his career derailed, and him accused of murder. Using a blend of relationship drama, social climbing, and professional betrayals, Monster weaves in heavy moral and ethical dilemmas into the storyline in ways that maximize tension and keep the pace pushing from episode to episode.

The pacing is slow, but with 45 minute episodes it covers a lot of ground with fun, action and plenty of emotion pay off to balance the occasional drag. So despite being a fantasy children's story brought to such life and flair that even the crabbiest of diehards will find themselves rooting for Onair and laughing at the hijinx of the odd-ball gods and monsters she encounters along the way. A warm, family friendly story anchored by the consistently stunning animation is the perfect mini-series palette cleanser.

exception takes a walk on the post-apocalyptic horror side with a story about a mission to terraform a planet that goes horribly awry. To escape AI control, humans have taken to space in search of a new home. The crew of humanoid entities created (from the DNA of living people) in a biological 3D printer called The Womb make up the advance party. Just as they arrive to start the work of making a new habitable planet, a misprint turns one crew member into a monster. Soon their ship becomes a hunting ground.

Based on the manga by Hiroshi Takashige and Ryōji Minagawa, Spriggan enters the list after only a six-episode debut jam-packed with action, slick character design, and a premise interesting to overcome an uneven start. Spriggan follows Yu Ominae, a 16-year-old super soldier tasked with finding and securing powerful artifacts.

Sent to Japan as a hostage, Lelouch, a prince of Britannia, escapes after an encounter leaves him with the power to control anyone. Lelouch becomes the masked rebel known as Zero and begins to mercilessly exact vengeance against Britannia. Code Geass is a genre blend with action, charisma, and just the right amount of bombasticness to carry the story from episode to episode. This alternate history full of mechs and magic is a wild ride.

If you prefer your shounen occasionally NSFW and built on a narrative designed to explore themes like prejudice, choice, introspection then Beastars may be the slice of life fantasy series for you. This drama-heavy mystery series digs into the lives of anthropomorphic animals; where carnivores and herbivores are trying to coexist peacefully. If Zootopia-eques that dig into slice-of-life stories and self-discovery are what grab and hold your interest then Beastars is definitely an anime series for you.

The goal is to have a list of great anime series that span many subgenres. We've included a mix of popular classics like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, along with relatively more obscure titles like The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. Whether you're a complete anime newbie or a hardcore otaku, there's something for everyone here.

So you want an anime with action, eh? Good news - there are quite a few. But if the action you want is of the athletic kind, more Balboa than Batman, then you won't go wrong getting into the Baki saga.

Baki tells the story of the titular character, a martial artist that goes up against massive physical threats as a way of getting out of his father's shadow. Originally a manga by Keisuke Itagaki, Baki's story has been serialized into over three different shows and a handful of specials - and the upcoming Netflix crossover epic Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura. If this sounds like your kind of action, read on forPopverse's Baki watch guide, where we'll cover how to watch the series in both chronological and release order.

Baki's animated adventures have been running since 1994, but don't panic - they aired off and on over these thirty years, and though his story stretches across three shows, none of them have more than a handful of seasons.

The answer to this, simply put, is time. Starting with Baki the Grappler, the events of the three series run linearly, following the fighter's history as he ages over the course of the three series. Now that we've got our timeline straight, let's go ahead and move on to...

Multiple Baki anime series have been released over the past few decades, which may make it seem fairly daunting trying to get into it. Luckily, if you want to watch Baki in chronological order you mainly have to stick to the order that it was released in. That means watching Baki the Grappler, followed by Netflix's Baki and then Baki Hanma.

If you're looking to watch Baki chronologically, the only thing that throws a spanner in the works is the first ever Baki anime, called Grappler Baki: The Ultimate Fighter. This OVA (original video animation) was a one-shot anime that was released in 1994. It takes place during the Baki the Grappler timeline and is best watched midway through that run.

If you're planning to watch the Baki animes available on Netflix just bear in mind that the Netflix-made Baki animes take place after the events of Baki the Grappler. The anime does try to accommodate fans that are new to the series though and using it as a starting point.

If you want to watch Baki in release order you just need to start with Grappler Baki: The Ultimate Fighter, which was first released in 1994, and work your way through to the latest Netflix series of Baki Hanma released in 2023.

Grappler Baki: The Ultimate Fighter is one of two Baki OVAs that were released throughout the anime's history. The other is Baki: Most Evil Death Row Convicts Special Anime, which is a 15 minute anime that was released on a DVD bundled with a volume of the Baki manga. This OVA takes place prior to the events of the first season of Netflix's Baki anime.

Once you get around to watching Baki on Netflix another thing that may confuse you is the way Baki is listed, with one boxset called The Great Raitai Tournament Saga. This is just Baki season 2, and for simplicity's sake, we've listed it like that in our watch order lists.

If you want to watch Baki the Grappler and the OVAs then things become more tricky. These animes aren't available to watch on any streaming service, so the only way you can watch it legally is by tracking down the original DVDs, which can no longer be purchased new as it's out-of-print.

You can pick up some second hand copies from Amazon Marketplace and eBay, but listings can fetch high prices. At the time of writing, season 1 of Baki the Grappler is available on Amazon but is priced at over $160. On eBay, we were able to find a copy of the Grappler Baki: The Ultimate Fighter OVA which was available for $21.99.

Baki has continued to be a popular anime and manga, which has stoked demand for more. In March 2023, it was confirmed that another anime had been green-lit, adapting the 2014 Baki-Dou manga. This storyline involves a legendary swordsman being revived in a secret government facility through the use of cloning and necromancy. Sort of like Emperor Palpatine only ripped. A release date for Baki-Dou hasn't been anounced yet, nor do we know where it will be streamed.

Don't want to wait that long? Netflix have announced a new anime due out on June 6, 2024 staring Baki Hanma. Titled Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura, this looks set to do exactly what the title says - pit two of the greatest anime fighters against each other in a grueling (and highly entertaining) death match. Few plot details are known at the moment but we expect there to be plenty of action and rippling muscles on screen at atll times.

The universe-jumping Isekai genre is one of the most popular in anime. The Rising of the Shield Hero is among its most successful representatives, telling the story of Naofumi Iwatani and his unlikely high-fantasy journey.

Black Clover earned positive reviews for its creative fantasy universe and attention to detail in world-building. The narrative tropes and similarities between it and series like Naruto, Bleach, and Fairy Tale are undeniable. Even so, Black Clover justifies its place among them thanks to its likable core cast, substantive side characters, and exciting action.

The anime adaptions of Baki and Kengan Ashura have enjoyed steady viewership on Netflix. Now, fans can watch these thrilling martial-arts-themed worlds collide in the anime movie Baki Hanma VS Kengan Ashura.

Animated by studio TMS Entertainment, this ambitious crossover event will pit the strongest fighters from each series against each other. Both Baki and Kengan Ashura succeed in how they embrace the absurdity in their action-packed premises. This collaborative movie is no exception, offering an hour of over-the-top martial arts spectacle.
