Athens, Georgia the premier bicycling community in the United States!*
Dear AthensGaBicycling riders,
As we look at the beautiful white snow outside, we are reminded that soon the snow will be gone and just two weeks remain before “Athens Bike Week” begins with the start of evening rides. We should have great weather each day of “Athens Bike Week” with the long range forecast looking promising, according to Accuweather:
Monday, March 9, 2015: 60°
Tuesday, March 10, 2015: 69°
Wednesday, March 11, 2015: 72°
Thursday, March 12, 2015: 68°
Of course, we have rides later this week, if the rain/snow melts and stays away, including:
Wednesday afternoon rides, only two remaining this week & next:
Elk 13-15mph @ 1:00pm from the Watkinsville Courthouse
Antelope 17-20mph @ 2:00pm from the Watkinsville Courthouse
Saturday rides:
Antelope 17-20mph @ 10:00am from the Watkinsville Courthouse.
Cheetah 20+mph @ 10am (window open) from The Hub Bicycles in Five Points.
Elk 13-15mph & Gazelle 15-17mph @ 11:00am from the Watkinsville Courthouse. Two group rides all meeting at the same time.
As we transition into spring and the winter riding season comes to a close, this is a good time to thank and acknowledge everyone that has helped make this winter one of the best group riding seasons yet!
Most importantly a big shout out to you and everyone that took part in group rides this winter! Without participation there would not be group rides. So take a moment and give yourself a pat on the back for continuing to make Athens a great riding community!
A special thank you to each person that took the time to lead a ride and help encourage others to ride, knowing that at least one other person would be at the ride start. These special ride leaders include Georgia, JeffE, OC, DianeM, Daisy, Carol, JimK and Rik.
One of the primary reasons Athens is such a huge bicycling community is the efforts and dedication of DavidC and his Winter Bike League (WBL). He created and manages the free weekly Saturday winter event that brings riders from throughout Georgia, the Southeast and the world to come to Athens to enjoy riding. These riders then come back later in their life to live and are Athens bicycling ambassadors throughout their lives, telling of their wonderful biking adventures in Athens. Thank you once again David!
The last shout-out and giant thank you goes to FrankC, who routinely goes back on rides and retrieves riders, who have fallen behind and paces them back to the peloton, including pacing them up hills… and always with a smile and positive encouragement. We are truly fortunate to have Frank as part of our riding community. From everyone that has fallen behind on a ride, you are an inspiration to what we should all be, a big thank you to you, Frank!
Good riding!
Joe
AGB Tip of the Week:
You probably know that United Parcel Service washes their trucks each day to ensure better gas mileage. If you have not washed your bicycle lately, just think how much less resistance you will have as your clean bike cuts through the wind!
