Athens, Georgia the premier bicycling community in the United States!*

Hello AthensGaBicycling riders,

OMG, the number is 41! Why is 41 significant? In addition to being the 13th smallest prime number..we only have 41 days until the beginning of the evening group rides!  So make a note on your calendar March 9, 2015, the official beginning of the Athens riding season! Also, the official beginning is the first Monday of the start of daylight savings time.

So the great equalizer is 41 days away. If you have not been riding, then you have 6 weeks to get into riding shape. If you have been riding all winter, then you have time to rest before the season begins.

Remember Athens, Georgia is the premier bicycling community in the United States because of you! So, help the cycling community in Athens and start preparing now for the best Athens cycling season yet!

Good riding!

Joe

AGB Tip of the Week:

With 41 days to go, for those people that have not ridden all winter and for those people who have, today would be a great day to look at your bike, check the tires for bald spots, check the chain for rust and make sure everything is shifting correctly. If not, make the necessary adjustments or drop your bicycle off at your favorite bicycle shop, so it will be ready to roll. Remember your physical fitness has the biggest impact on your “bicycling engine,” but you want to make sure you do not neglect your trusted bicycle and allow your bike to become passive aggressive. (Bicycle passive aggressive = pervasive pattern of negative performance and resistance to demands for adequate performance)

Athens, Georgia the premier bicycling community in the United States!*

Hello AthensGaBicycling riders,

The remainder of the week seems perfect for winter bicycling with the nicest weather forecast for Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. As luck would have it on each of those days there are group bicycle rides on the Ride Calendar. So, pick your favorite ride and come join the fun.

Wednesday rides:

  • Elk 13-15mph @ 1:00pm from Oconee Heights Baptist Church. The ride consistently has a group of loyal followers, plenty of parking and great routes.

  • Antelope 17-20mph @ 2:00pm from Watkinsville Courthouse. A perfect recovery ride for WBLers & Cheetahs and a perfect “race” ride for Antelopes. Consistent double-pace line riding for the first 42.5 miles and then “hammer-time” at the bottom of the final hill on Price Mill until the return to the ride start in Watkinsville.

Saturday rides:

  • Antelope 17-20mph @ 10:00am from Watkinsville Courthouse. Even with 35mph wind gusts two weeks ago the Antelopes rode. Just think how big the herd will be if you join the ride this Saturday with an expected high of 61°!

  • Cheetah 20+mph @ 10:00am (window open) from The Hub in Five Points.  Only two WBL rides left. This one will be the easiest “Lake Oconee Classic” of the season. Just 97 miles, but if you ride your bike to the ride start, you can easily make it a Century Ride!

  • Elk 13-15mph @ 12:00noon from Oconee Heights Baptist Church. This is the route that is featured in Bicycling magazine as one of the best and most beautiful rides in Athens. (Full disclosure the route will be slightly different from the “official” Apple Valley ride, making a left rather than a right at the end of Orr School Road, but the roads and beauty will be identical.)

Sunday rides:

  • Gazelle 15-17mph @ 10:00am from Whit Davis Elementary. Relaxed, fun and all downhill except for the uphill climbs, the rollers and the flats.

  • Cheetah 20+mph @ 10:00am (window open) from The Hub in Five Points. After riding 100 miles yesterday (of course you did the 3 extra miles to make it a century) a perfect recovery ride.

  • Women’s Ride @ 11:00am from Georgia Cycle Sport. Fun and enjoyable and the only 100% Women’s ride in town!

Good riding!

Joe

(For new riders, from the website): How to join a ride? Ride participation is open to all bicyclists living in or visiting the Athens, Georgia bicycling area. There is no cost for any group ride.  It is that simple. Just come and ride your bike.

Yes, it really is that simple. No forms to sign. No groups to join. No haggling. No clothing requirements. (Well, we do ask that you wear clothes.) No solicitations. No secret handshakes. No special equipment. Just check the Ride Calendar, find the ride you like and meet at the ride start for a great ride.
