Athens, Georgia the premier bicycling community in the United States!*

Hello AthensGaBicycling riders,

The latin phrase for this week is “Carpe Diem.”

With soggy weather currently predicted for much of the week, if blue skies appear and the roads are dry, you may want to join a group ride on that day, because the next day may bring more rain and slippery roads. Remember in general, isolated and scattered thunderstorms means that 30% to 40% of a given area will have rain; or 60% to 70% will not have rain. If you had a 70% chance of winning the lottery just think how happy you would be!

Update on group rides:

  • The Thursday Georgia Cycle Sport ride will once again start from Georgia Cycle Sport at 6:00pm. (There have been a few riders that have taken it upon themselves to change the start time and starting location.) With this week and into the future the official Thursday ride begins again, as it has for 30 years, at the steps of Georgia Cycle Sport at 6:00pm, window open. In fact, the Manager of Georgia Cycle Sport and well known cyclist, MichaM, will personally be leading out the peloton. Of course there is plenty of free parking, so you can leave your cars at Georgia Cycle Sport for the duration of the ride. Come join the reboot of the Georgia Cycle Sport Ride!

With 12 weekday evening rides to choose from this week, just make your pick from the ride calendar and then a back-up pick and maybe another back-up pick, and then hope for sunny skies!

AGB Tip of the Week:

After riding in the rain, wiping off your bike is a very good idea, especially the wheel rims and the brakes. On some bikes in order to get all the water out of the frame in a timely manner, the bike needs to be inverted (turned upside down) and left to drain. Also, be sure to lube the chain with officially designated bicycle chain lubricant. AGB recommends that you do not use motor oil (will not get rid of the dirt), WD-40 (not a lubricant, but an oil remover/degreaser) or olive oil (good for cooking, not so much for biking).

Good riding!

Joe

Athens, Georgia the premier bicycling community in the United States!*

Hello AthensGaBicycling riders,

A great week for group rides are upon us with two days of forecasts of 0 (zero) percent chance of rain!

Longtime active member of the Athens cycling community, Ruben, will be permanently leaving Athens for D.C. this week. To say goodbye and get one last ride with him, join him tonight on the Monday Sunshine Antelope Ride, leaving from New Sunshine at 5:45pm or from the old Sunshine downtown location at 6:00pm. You can also congratulate Reuben for successfully completing Brasstown Bald for the first (and last) time this past Friday!

Wednesday continues to be one of the best days for joining a ride with many ride speeds to choose and this week with no predicted rain!  All Wednesday rides begin at 6:00pm including:

  • Beginner ride from Oconee Heights Baptist Church

  • Elk ride from Winterville’s Pittard Park

  • Antelope ride from Watkinsville’s Courthouse

  • Cheetah ride from “The Silos” on Old Jefferson Road

AGB Tip of the Week:

Know how to change a flat and have practical experience. YouTube.com is a great way to learn how to change a flat, but after watching the videos be sure to actually practice what has been taught. Recently GeorgeN came upon a group of 13 riders, one of whom had a flat. As all 13 riders stared at the flat, nobody actually could change it, so they were just staring at the tire, but the group said that one person had watched a YouTube video on changing a tire. George of course changed the tire for them, but we may not always be so lucky as to have George stop and change each of our tires.
