Athens, Georgia the premier bicycling community in the United States!*

Dear AthensGaBicycling riders,

Another great week of riding ahead and winter temperatures seem again to be behind us! The weather seems to be in our favor with only Thursday currently predicting rain, but based on the past few weeks, rides may happen even on Thursday.

For everyone that would like to ride in the afternoon, there is still one ride scheduled:

  • Tuesday, 1:00pm, Elk=13-15mph from Oconee Heights Baptist Church, 4180 Jefferson Road. Though an Elk ride, many members of the group are planning on riding a long distance ride in a few weeks, so they are working on their speed and distance. Everyone is welcome!

Speaking of Tuesday, the Tuesday evening Antelope has gotten off to a wonderful start this year. Amazing things can happen to a ride once the evil rain gods focus on other days.

  • Tuesday, 6:00pm, Antelope=17-20mph from Oconee Heights Baptist Church, 4180 Jefferson Road. If you have yet to participate in this ride, the ride will help you get in shape and stay that way! A great group of riders in a dual paceline “team effort” atmosphere. New faces are always welcome!

If you cannot make the Tuesday Antelope, then the Wednesday Antelope will be waiting for you the next day:

  • Wednesday, 6:00pm, Antelope=17-20mph from Watkinsville Courthouse. The Wednesday Antelope continues to be the largest group ride in the Athens area. A concerted effort has been made to keep the ride speed for the first part of the ride (before Colham Ferry) to below 18mph to ensure safety in the peloton, including those riders who have taken the winter off and need to reacquaint themselves with riding in such a large group. This also keeps the yo-yo effect at a minimum as riders once again get accustomed to fast double-pace line riding. Not to worry, the sprints have no speed limits, so be ready and come join the fun!

Also, this Saturday for people working on their long distance riding to get into shape; or to participate in various metric centuries or centuries throughout the state; or who enjoy the challenge of an 80 mile ride,  the OC Dean’s Birthday Challenge ride is back again this year:

  • Saturday, 9:00am, Elk=13-15mph from Homewood Hills Shopping Center, 2475 Jefferson Road, Athens. New for this year, the ride will circumnavigate Athens clockwise, making stops at the Sanford Community Center (Nowhere Rd), Winterville (Little City Diner), Watkinsville (Jittery Joe's), and Race-Trac (Mars Hill Rd and US 78). Optional ride dinner at 5:30 p.m. at La Parrilla. If you do not have the time (or energy) to do the entire route, you can join the ride start and then pedal back into Athens on your own to fit your needs. Remember, the ride goes around Athens, so you are never too far away.

Good riding!

Joe

AGB Tip of the Week:

Join a group ride today, tomorrow or this week, because, “Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in that grey twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.” Theodore Roosevelt
