Dear AthensGaBicycling riders,
Athens Bike Week is here. Please check the Ride Calendar for all the great rides.
Monday’s rides got off to a great start. Though overcast the rides made it with only a few raindrops. Let’s hope the rest of the week, including this evening, we are as lucky. Originally the entire week looked “washed out," but as each day and each hour passes the weather seems to be improving, so let’s hope the rain continues to miss us.

It's a free event open to everyone, as long as they are a female! Snacks and drinks will be provided. Sunshine Cycle will follow-up the clinic on Saturday with a bike demo day with a full line on female (and male) specific bikes to try out at Trail Creek Park in Athens. This has been Sunshine Cycles most popular clinic in the past, so make sure to arrive early! Please contact Sunshine Cycles for all the details.
Finally, a clarification and correction: Starting next month on Wednesday, April at 6:00pm The Beginner ride from Oconee Heights Baptist Church, 4180 Old Jefferson Road, Athens, Ga will take place and continue each Wednesday.
Good riding!

AGB Tip of the Week:
Make sure to wear cycling gloves. In addition to giving better grip and looking like a true cyclist, gloves are great in case of a fall, before during or after a ride, since they act as great skin hand protectors. Also, for cross-trainers or weight lifters, cycling gloves can be used in the gym to help your hands better grip dumbbells, barbells and kettlebells; and then continue on your bicycling journey. All this is accomplished without your gloves complaining, needing recovery or wanting to rest. Basically, cycling gloves can easily become your BFF!

Dear AthensGaBicycling riders,
A beautiful day today for a bike ride! (In fact the most beautiful day based on the Accuweather forecasts for the entire month!)
Join a ride tonight (Tuesday)
5:30pm Cheetah=20+mph from The Hub Bicycles in Five Points
6:00pm Antelope=17-20mph from Oconee Heights Baptist Church, 4180 Old Jefferson Rd, Athens, GA
The return of the evening rides last week, commonly known as “Athens Bike Week” for those in the know, got off to a tremendous start. Though the rain tried to keep the riders away, the response was “no más, vamos en camino” with almost every ride leaving with a solid group of riders.
In fact, the total numbers of riders grew each day from Monday through Wednesday!
Thursday rides, had a few hiccups as riders left prematurely, to avoid the potential darkness brought on by the heavy cloud cover. This of course left some riders asking where are the other riders? Hopefully, everything will be worked out by next week, since this Thursday again seems a little rainy.
Even last Saturday morning riders took to the road despite less than perfect riding conditions. If you have ever wondered, “Should I go to the courthouse for the Saturday 10:00am Antelope ride?” Well, here is an answer, even last Saturday with wind, drizzle and cold temperatures, you would have been met by a group of dedicated riders including ChrisV, Dan and ChrisW. Just think how may will join the ride this Saturday with a nice forecast?
Finally, join the day that has the most group riders on the road, Wednesday night:
6:00pm Elk=13-15mph from Pittard Park, Winterville on 1st, 3rd & 5th Wednesdays of the month and from Whit Davis Elementary, Athens, GA on 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of the month
6:00pm Antelope=17-20mph from behind the Watkinsville Courthouse.
6:00pm Cheetah=20+mph from "The Silos," 3744 Old Jefferson Road, Athens, GA
Good riding!
Joe
AGB Tip of the Week:
Getting back into shape after the winter rest or injury. One of the best ways to get into shape is to get on the front of the peloton and pull for an extended period of time. With other riders encouraging you to maintain the ride speed, you will quickly get up to speed and your muscle memory will take it from there. Of course, pulling into the wind, is also beneficial because you will get back into shape even quicker. This theory was recently tested in a real world environment with JimW, who is recovering from a knee injury, pulling almost the entire time into the wind on the Thursday Gazelle ride. Thank you Jim for testing the theory. Okay, maybe this was more about how to help the peloton than getting into shape, so more testing should be conducted this week on the rides!
