Athens, Georgia the premier bicycling community in the United States!*

Hello AthensGaBicycling riders,

First, on behalf of the entire bicycling community, “Thank you for riding this past year!” Athens has become the premier bicycling community in the United States because of you! Yes, we have become the best bicycling community just because of you. You simply rode your bike on a group ride and this has led to the creation of more group rides, which brought in more riders, which allowed the creation of more new ride, which brought in more riders. All of which led to Athens becoming the leader in free, open to all evening group road bicycle rides in the United States.* So once again, thank you for riding this spring, summer and fall!

Now the winter riding season begins. Here are the notable ride dates to put into your calendar (or onto your calendar for those who still use a paper calendar):

  • Wednesday, November 5, 2014 (this Wednesday): Start of the Weekly Wonderful Winter Wednesday Watkinsville Ride at 2:00pm from the Watkinsville Courthouse; then continues each subsequent Wednesday

  • Monday, November 17, 2014 (two weeks from now): Official start of the new Marvelous Monday Mitten Ride at 2:00pm (mittens are optional); from near the railroad tracks at 585 Barber St in Athens between Team Clermont and Jittery Joe’s Roasters; then continues each subsequent Monday

  • Saturday, December 6, 2014 (about one month from now): The Winter Bike League’s first official ride at 10:00am from The Hub in Five Points, the new start location for the entire season; then continues each subsequent Saturday.

Also, the normal AGB Saturday Antelope and Gazelle rides are switching to 10:00am effective this weekend, November 8 & 9:

  • Saturday, Antelope 10:00am for the remainder of the winter from the Watkinsville courthouse

  • Sunday, Gazelle 10:00am for the remainder of the winter from Whit Davis Elementary

Many other great rides this week. Please see the Ride Calendar.

AGB Tip of the Week:

[Reprinted and updated from a previous newsletter and now available online from the AGB website: http://athensgabicycling.com/content/clothing-winter-riding-athens]: During winter riding months in Athens, many people wonder the appropriate apparel to wear in cold weather.  After much research and asking many riders their expert opinions, the following general guide may help.  The guide is a suggestion of what to wear differently than a person would wear in the summer.  Of course each person is different, so after experimenting, you can hopefully find your perfect gear for warmth.  If you have already been riding in Athens in December or ridden in the winter in the past, then you have already conquered the cold, so you can just skip the guide.

  • 30° to 40°: wool socks, full shoe covers, long sleeve cycling jacket, balaclava head covering (not to be confused with baklava, which probably should not be worn on your head), long legged tights/cycling pants and full finger gloves.

  • 40° to 50°: wool socks, full shoe covers, headband ear covers, cycling vest, thermal long sleeve cycling jersey, long legged tights/cycling pants and full finger gloves.

  • 50° to 60°: wool socks, shoe toe covers, thermal long sleeve cycling jersey, removable leggings or long legged tights/cycling pants and full finger gloves.

  • 60° to 70°:  long sleeve cycling jersey

  • Special “old school” suggestion:  If you ever find yourself under-dressed on a ride just find a newspaper and stick it underneath your jersey. Tour de France riders still use this technique. Please note: only a physical newspaper will work, after experimenting, online newspapers do not seem to keep you warmer.

Good riding!

Joe
