Athens, Georgia the premier bicycling community in the United States!*

Hello AthensGaBicycling riders,

Good news, only six days until the Winter Solstice. As many people know, the Winter Solstice marks the day when each day gets a little bit longer and most importantly the start to the evening group rides, which start March 9, 2015 or about 11 weeks after Sunday!

Other ride updates for the holidays:

  • The Sunday Gazelle ride is canceled for the holidays until 2015.

  • The Wednesday Antelope is canceled next week on Christmas eve.

  • Currently, all other rides will remain on the schedule throughout the holidays, but there may be more or less riders, as many people come to visit Athens or leave town for the holidays.

Also, another record setting attendance for last week’s Antelope Weekly Wonderful Winter Wednesday Watkinsville Ride. This Wednesday’s ride may set an all time attendance record for an afternoon workweek ride, since so many people are taking vacation time, out of school or feel the need to ride before visiting relatives for the holidays. Join the fun this week:

  • Wednesday Antelope from the Watkinsville Courthouse 2:00pm (One question has come up about the ride, “I noticed polka dot leggings in the peloton, are these required?” The short answer is, “No.” But the longer answer is a little trickier, if you are the fastest rider up each climb, then as the King of the Mountains, you too should wear polka dots.)

The Winter Bike League (WBL) had their second outing last week with another adventure happening this week. If you have ever thought about joining one of the WBL rides, the holidays is normally a good time, since the rides are a little bit smaller, so if you enjoy riding at the back of the peloton to get the best workout (physically & mentally) then the slinky effect is less prevalent.

  • Saturday Cheetah from The Hub in Five Points 10:00am (window open)

AGB Tip of the Week:

Shoe cleats: the most common shoe cleats for pedals are SPD (made out of metal); SPD-L (made out of plastic), Look (made out of plastic) and Speedplay (made out of medal). Almost all these cleats must be replaced on a regular basis. This includes the metal ones. For example Speedplay suggests the cleats be replaced every 3000 to 5000 miles and they may be the longest lasting of all the pedal cleats. Also, a note from Santa: Pedal cleats make a great stocking stuffer.

Good riding!

Joe
