Dear AthensGaBicycling riders,
As we enter the summer months in Athens, we are treated to three months of wonderful and beautiful riding. With UGA on summer sessions there are less cars on the road, which translates into plenty of additional space for bicycling! Also as public and private K-12 schools stop classes for the summer, everyone can get into a cycling routine for the summer. With this in mind, choose your ride and join your friends, current and/or future. In fact you can join a ride today. (Remember tomorrow never arrives, so always ride today!) Below are a selection of rides for this week:
Today (Tuesday)
Wednesday
Thursday
Saturday

AGB Tip of the Week:
Sometimes even if you think you know how to fix your bike, you should take your bike to an expert. We are fortunate to have skilled bike mechanics (and shop owners & managers), who can correctly diagnose problems that may go unnoticed by a weekend mechanic. Remember they identify and repair more bicycle problems in a day than most of us have in an entire year. So if you are having a problem, just stop by your favorite shop and they will solve it for you. (Clarification: they will solve your bike related problems...though they may be able to help with other issues, bicycles are their sweet spot.)

Dear AthensGaBicycling riders,
The latest weather forecast predicts it will either be dry the rest of today and tomorrow evening; or we may have rain through tomorrow evening. With this in mind, the best decision may be to go “old school” and look outside at 5:30pm (and check radar on your phone/computer) and then make the decision to proceed to the ride start. Remember the rain normally comes from the west, so make sure you look west before heading out this evening.
Last Wednesday had a very good turnout for most of the Wednesday rides, including one of the largest number of riders in recent weeks for the Antelope ride. A big shout-out to Frank & Robert for setting the tone of the ride with a steady pull for the beginning of the ride. Though the Wednesday Gazelle ride has had one ride leader depart to the North and one put on injured reserve; Rik and Daisy & Diane have taken over as ride leaders for the duration of the summer, so all the rides will continue without any changes!
Wednesday
Wednesday Antelope 6:00pm from the Watkinsville courthouse
Wednesday Gazelle 6:00pm from Whit Davis Elementary
Wednesday Cheetah 6:00pm from the Silos
Please watch the weather closely. Hopefully, the storms will come early and Thursday night will have wonderful weather!
Thursday
Thursday Gazelle 6:00pm from Whit Davis Elementary
Thursday Cheetah 6:00pm from Georgia Cycle Sport
The best riding day of the week may be Saturday morning! With three great rides to match your riding needs:
Saturday
Saturday Antelope 9:00am from the Watkinsville courthouse
Saturday Cheetah 9:00am from The Hub in Five Points
Saturday Elk 9:00am from Oconee Heights Baptist Church, 4180 Jefferson Rd

AGB Tip of the Week:
Speaking of rain. The greatest danger of riding in the rain is not hydroplaning or slipping but vehicular traffic. Most cars do not expect to see bicyclists on the road when it is raining. On rides that may encounter rain, please remember to wear bright and visible colors! Just as a reminder, we may encounter rain on the rides today and tomorrow, so it would be a good time to break-out your brightest jersey and check the batteries in your blinky light!

Dear AthensGaBicycling riders,
Rain, rain go away! This weeks seems to be a very good week (Monday through Thursday) to focus on mental visualizations cycling exercises, rather than riding with a group. Of course there is always hope that the clouds and rain may clear, but currently Saturday and Sunday morning seems to be the best riding days:
Saturday
Saturday Antelope 9:00am from the Watkinsville courthouse
Saturday Cheetah 9:00am from The Hub in Five Points
Saturday Gazelle 9:00am from Pittard Park in Winterville
Saturday
Sunday Gazelle 9:00am from Whit Davis Elementary

AGB Tip of the Week:
If you have a clicking sound that occurs with each pedal stroke then three primary problems could be occurring: 1. The Bottom Bracket needs to be replaced (for most people this means a trip to your favorite bike shop); 2. The cleat on the shoe is loose (simply tighten the cleat) 3. The pedal is loose (though this may not even be visible without a microscope, just remove and clean the threads then use the appropriate grease on the threads - so the pedal can be removed in the future - and then put the pedal back/re-tighten the pedal).

Dear AthensGaBicycling riders,
This week’s weather forecasts looks to be the best week so far this summer for riding. Of course there still may be pop-up thunderstorms, as happened last week with many rain soaked Wednesday riders. Hopefully this week will bring only sunshine to the rides.
You can join a ride as soon as today:
Monday
Antelope 6:00pm from the Old Sunshine Cycles location in downtown Athens at the corner of Pulaski and Washington
Cheetah 6:00pm from SPARC, 1765 Old West Broad Building 3 in Athens
Gazelle/Antelope 6:00pm from 4794 Fairplay Road in Bostwick, GA
Also, this Saturday the Women’s ride from Sunshine Cycles have arrived back on the calendar at 8:30am. Everyone (who is female) is welcome to join the ride. In addition the Gazelle ride has a brand new route leaving from the Watkinsville Courthouse at 9:00am.
Saturday
Saturday Elk Women’s 8:30am from Sunshine Cycles in Watkinsville
Saturday Antelope 9:00am from the Watkinsville courthouse
Saturday Cheetah 9:00am from The Hub in Five Points
Saturday Elk 9:00am from the Watkinsville courthouse

With the rides always worried about rain this time of year, please try to arrive early so everyone can leave at the designated departure time and hopefully stay dry for the entire ride!

The rain has gone away! This is a great week to get back to riding or continue to ride your bike! In fact, you can ride every evening this week, starting today:
Tuesday, selected rides:
Antelope 6:00pm from Oconee Heights Baptist Church
Mountain Biking Ride 6:15pm from The Hub Bicycles (and avoid the direct sunlight for much of the ride)
In case you did not bring your water or Gatorade with you today, you are in luck four great rides to choose at almost every level, so you can ride tomorrow:

Beginner/Coyote 6:00pm from Oconee Heights Baptist Church
Cheetah 6:00pm from “The Silos” Old Jefferson Road
Gazelle 6:00pm from Pittard Park/City Hall in Winterville
Special shout-out to Loehr and The Hub for alerting Bill, who stopped by the Thursday Gazelle ride to let the riders know about the torrential rain in Five Points that was headed northeast. Luckily, this week the Thursday rides should be especially dry:
Thursday, selected rides:
Cheetah 6:00pm from Georgia Cyclesports
Gazelle 6:00pm from Whit Davis Elementary

AGB Tip of the Week:
With the record high temperatures forecast for the week, as we have mentioned on a prior newsletter, the latest research shows that a rider should drink when she/he is thirsty. http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/forget-your-hydration-rules-just-drink-when-youre-thirsty-180950290/?no-ist For some riders this is a novel concept. To illustrate when to drink, here are a couple examples: You are riding along and you feel thirsty, then you get your drink bottle off your bike and have a drink. On the other hand, you are riding along and you are not thirsty, then you leave the bottle in your bottle-rack on your bike.
Of course for some people this system may not work because there are no pre-set times, no spreadsheets and no structures to follow. Unfortunately as of this writing, there is no advanced technique that is recommended, but by this time next year, a book will certainly be written on the correct drinking when thirsty system. So for now we just have to use the basic system.
