Athens, Georgia the premier bicycling community in the United States!*
Hello AthensGaBicycling riders,
With the temperature potentially reaching 70° this afternoon, another great day to ride your bike, if you have the afternoon off, or if you are not feeling well and decide to leave work early:
Wednesday, 1:00pm Elk from Oconee Heights Baptist Church
Wednesday, 2:00pm Antelope from the Watktinsville Courthouse
Also, a shout out to all the participants for the debut of the Monday Gazelle 2:00pm Mitten Ride, which set an attendance record for an initial winter afternoon start-up Ride with 9 people starting the ride from 585 Barber Street at Team Clermont. Also, a shout-out to NelsonW, who provided parking for the debut of the ride. On a temperature note, mittens were very much optional since the temperatures were in the 70s.
Also, coming Saturday (or next Saturday depending on weather) is the start of the Winter Bike League season. As many people know by now, all the rides will start each week from The Hub Bikes in 5-points. The ride will normally leave at 10:00am “window open.” Please check the Winter Bike League this Friday, which will direct you whether the ride will happen this week. www.WinterBikeLeague.com
Finally, in case Saturday rides get rained out, Sunday rides should currently all go as scheduled:
Sunday, 10:00am Gazelle from Whit Davis Elementary
Sunday, 10:00am Cheetah from The Hub
Sunday, 11:00am Women’s Ride from Georgia Cycle Sport
AGB Tip of the Week:
Rain and rust. Though most bike frames and wheels are manufactured with aluminum, carbon or titanium, some of the most important parts are made of steel, including shift and brake cables. In case you have not checked them lately, check to ensure the are rust free. For most bikes, the derailleur cables runs below the bottom bracket and are constantly exposed to the elements. If you see rust, replace the cables. Rust is the metal itself oxidizing or breaking down, cleaning or oiling the cables will not fix the problem but will only cover the rust. Of course, some people will say that they have internal cabling and do not need to worry about rust. Just remember, almost all cabling is exposed to water and can easily seep down the cable/cable covering onto the lowest spot, even if you ride very fast, gravity has a tendency to bring water to the lowest point on the cable.
Good riding!
Joe
