Athens, Georgia the premier bicycling community in the United States!*
Hello AthensGaBicycling riders,
Happy Labor Day! Hopefully many of you are having the day off and spending time with friends and family and/or going on a bike ride!
This newsletter will be focused on looking forward:
As the days get shorter, many people are wonder, “When do the evening bike rides end?” Good news, they do not end until the start of Standard Time on November 2. Or another way to remember is after Halloween or after the Georgia-Florida football game. In other words, we have two more months of evening riding!
On another note, almost all the rides move to 5:30 pm at the end of this month, September/the first week of October, or more specifically September 29. Please check the ride calendar for your ride. When we setup the calendar for the year, AthensGaBicycling communicated with ride participants/leaders/starters and most agreed that based on past experience the last week of this month was a good time to change the start time to allow for the most light on the rides, so we updated the calendar in March so we would hopefully have a smooth transition for the time shift.
The next question that has come up, “What happens after November for weekday rides?” Great news this year, there are two weekday rides each week starting in November to enjoy for people taking vacation days, leaving work early, having the day off from class or for people that have Monday or Wednesday off from work:
The new for 2015 Monday Marvelous Mitten Gazelle Ride (The 3-M Ride) each Monday at 2:00 pm, starting in November. Meet on Barber Street near the railroad tracks between Team Clermont and Jittery Joe's Roasters. The ride is just fast enough to stay in shape and just hilly enough to keep in mountain riding shape. Ride to the ride start or drive and leave your car. The ride has a convenient start close to downtown, UGA campus, Normal Town and the hospitals. The ride will go down Boulevard to leave Athens and then complete a modified Apple Valley loop of about 45 miles. (Of course mittens are optional.)
Weekly Wonderful Winter Wednesday Watkinsville Antelope Ride (The 5-W Ride) each Wednesday at 2:00pm, starting in November from behind the Watkinsville Courthouse. Base building ride. The ride normally averages around 19 mph (which is zone 2, the endurance zone) for about 50+ miles. The ride has consistently had a good number of riders for each ride for the past two years. (Please remember to bring your riding legs!)
Many other great rides this week. Please see the Ride Calendar.
AGB Tip of the Week:
If you are new to Athens and come from a flat riding area, please remember that the ride speeds are based on having many hills on each ride, which significantly slows the pace of a ride. Many riders come to a ride start, thinking 18mph would be easy, since that is what their average speed in Florida/Kansas/Texas/Oklahoma was. Then after the first hill, the realization comes that hills can take off 5 to 10mph on the average speed of a ride. When in doubt, choose a little bit slower ride and then work your way to the Cheetah.
Good riding!
Joe
