Athens, Georgia the premier bicycling community in the United States!*

Hello AthensGaBicycling riders,

With the summer half over, today is a good day to start (or continue) your fitness regime. We will have eight straight weeks without a holiday to form a fitness routine. Just pull-up the ride Ride Calendar make a commitment to yourself on the rides for each week and you are well on your way to physical fitness for the fall.

For anyone that has yet to join a group ride, two ride options this Wednesday, which may help with your transition :

  • Wednesday Beginner Ride at 6:00pm from Oconee Heights Baptist Church, 4180 Old Jefferson Road, Athens, Ga. This ride is perfect for a new rider, including someone who has recently purchased a bike and wants to get into cycling. Just arrive a little early and introduce yourself to Heidi or Al and they will take it from there to ensure you have a fun ride.

  • Wednesday Elk Ride at 6:00pm from Whit Davis Elementary. This ride is a good match for someone who has ridden her/his bikes for years, but has not previously ridden with a group. Just say hello to Rik when you arrive and he will help you transition into the ride.

AGB Tip of the Week:

Ride etiquette and the Tour de France. With the Tour in full swing, one of the many conversations you will hear on evening group rides, is talk about how the Tour is going. Now comes the hard part. The Tour is shown twice on TV in the States in Athens, once in the morning, starting around 9:00am and then the abridged version is shown in the evening. With this information in mind, it is always okay to talk about the prior day’s stage, but the current day’s stage should not be discussed since most people will watch the tour in the evening and do not know the outcome. For those who watch the morning version of the Tour, just remember, yes, it is sometimes hard not to share your superior knowledge, but you can always share another piece of your brilliance, and wait until tomorrow to discuss today’s Tour stage.

Good riding!

Joe
