Athens, Georgia the premier bicycling community in the United States!*

Hello AthensGaBicycling riders,

Cool weather is upon us this morning, only time will tell whether the cool tempertures will stay...since the weather forecasts seem to be more of a guide as of late.

The big news is that the UGA football team plays Clemson this Saturday at 5:30pm, so there will be traffic coming into Athens starting on Friday. So please plan your rides accordingly.

Also, this weekend is Labor Day weekend. With the Clemson game keeping many people in town, all the weekend rides will continue as normal. Please be sure to arrive to the Saturday rides ahead of time, so the rides can leave on time and avoid the increase in the number of cars on the road as kickoff gets closer.

  • Antelope from the Watkinsville Courthouse @ 8:00am: Another great ride happened last week, so mark your calendars to join this week.

  • Cheetah from The Hub Bikes @ 9:00am: Always a challenge and always fast. Test your mettle with the fastest Saturday ride.

  • Elk from 3 Oak Drive, Athens, Georgia @ 9:00am: This ride commemorates the 14th Anniversary of the Bear Creek Boogie. Join O.C. as he leads you on a journey on one of the most beautiful and low-traffic routes near Athens.

Many other great rides this week please see the Ride Calendar for full details.

AGB Tip of the Week:

How to signal a right hand turn in the State of Georgia on a bicycle: “Georgia Code: O.C.G.A. § 40-6-291  (2014)  Traffic laws applicable to bicycles; signaling of right hand turns (c) Any person operating a bicycle may signal a right turn with his or her right arm and hand extended horizontally or with his or her left hand and arm extended upward.” Remember the purpose of signaling is to alert riders and drivers behind you of your intentions. Some drivers may have never seen a left hand signal to make a right turn except when they took the written driving exam to receive their initial driver license. Also, the first turn signals were put on a car in 1939, so those people aged over 91 years of age, may have routinely used hand signals many years ago, but few people have used their left hands to make a right turn in the past 50 years.

Good riding!

Joe
