We all sort of decided to keep the name Athens homebrewers but it is
kind of generic and not very representive of our group - I think we
should explore some other names. If you have an thought let's hear it.

I'm not much of a literary guy per se, but I just finished reading
"Notes from Underground" by Fyodor Dostoevsky and there was a passage
that struck a chord with me. It basically sums up the entire reason
why I (and I suspect everyone else in this club) brews beer:

"Perhaps you are laughing again? Laugh away; I will put up with all
mockery rather than pretend I am full when I'm hungry...
Destroy my desires, eradicate my ideals, show me something better, and
I will follow you. You will say, perhaps, that it is not worth your
trouble; but in that case I can give you the same answer. We are
discussing things seriously; but if you won't deign to give me your
attention, I will drop your acquaintance. I have the underground."

In light of this, I suggest "Athens Underground Brewers" or something
along those lines. Though I have to admit it is perhaps too esoteric.

I like "Athens Underground Brewers".  There's nothing wrong with esoteric (I would have called if off-the-wall).  Might make people think.

I agree with Kieth about references to dogs, dawgs, bulldogs,
bulldawgs, or anything else having to do with UGA.

I think i like Athens League of Extraordinary Zymergists. Besides
being clever, it has the added plus of being a nod to the graphic
novel work of noted anarchist Alan Moore.

It looks like we're getting a pretty good list...lots of cool ideas.
There are as many names as there are beers. I think we should make a
list of names that have been second and vote by show of hands at the
next meeting. That being the case, I second Jordan's CLASSIC CITY
HOMEBREWERS.

Classic City Brewers sounds better imo. i would say just keep this
forum up until close to the next meeting and let the names keep
rolling in. Then read off each name suggested here from a list at the
next meeting. Each name that gets seconded at that moment moves on to
a round of voting. If no name takes a majority at that vote than take
the top 3 or four and vote on those whittling them down until one name
gets a majority. that would be fair and fast though that kind of
process could produce a name that relatively few people are actually
happy with. it also is helpful to have a whiteboard or something to so
that people can see the names in play.

on one hand, i have been in groups where no one was particularly
enthused about the name and that seemed to lead to apathy and i have
also been in groups where we spent so long on figuring out a name that
when we finally settled on one the excitement for the group had waned.
that excitement could have been better spent doing tangible
constructive projects that contribute more to the longevity and
seriousness of the group. i'm not saying it has to be either/or i'm
just relaying my experiences from the many activist and political orgs
i've been involved in.

here is a way to make voting quick and colse ot fair:
http://www.instantrunoffvoting.us/index.html

using this method or the way justin suggested could get this solved by
the end of next month's meeting and get us focused on beer.
