Athens Area Bicyclists,
I saw the announcement about this research study and thought that I could help get the word out by posting to this email group. If you don't mind a little torture (what distance cyclists doesn't?), then participating in this study might be for you. See details below.

IRB # 21-F-33

RESEARCH STUDY PARTICIPANTS NEEDED

You are invited to participate in a study investigating how tart cherry juice affects heat acclimation, inflammation, and the gut microbiome.

This research study will require you to report to the exercise physiology lab 15 different times over 6 weeks (for a total of 15 hours).

The first visit will include a body composition and aerobic capacity testing. The remaining visits will require you to exercise in a hot environment (95°F and 45% humidity) to acclimate to the heat (5 consecutive days preceded and followed by a heat stress test). This will occur twice, once while supplementing with tart cherry juice, once with placebo. Blood and stool samples will be collected.

Up to $100 compensation is available for completing the study.

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are male, aged 18-55
  • Are a cyclist who participates in endurance training at least 150 min/week for the past 6 months
  • Have no known or suspected cardiopulmonary disease, metabolic disorders, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or other autonomic nervous system condition, not diagnosed or being treated for arthritis or any inflammatory condition (such as Lupus, gout, or Sjogren’s syndrome)
  • Do not have orthostatic hypotension or low blood pressure
  • Have never experienced a heat-related illness, such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke and do not have issues with cooling or sweating
  • Do not smoke or quit more than a year ago
  • Willing to provide blood and stool samples

To see if you qualify, please complete the pre-screening survey
