Pawpaw Double Nickel Bicycle Ride
Saturday, Sept. 17, with registration opening at 8:30 am
Hosted by the Athens Bicycle Club, this 55-mile road ride starts and ends in the Pawpaw Festival parking lot access road, just outside the main entrance to the festival. The ride will take you from Albany on a looping tour around Zaleski State Forest in Vinton County. Enjoy challenging climbs, ridge top views and sweet downhills, all along the Raccoon Creek Watershed. A rest stop awaits you at the halfway point. There is also a shorter 22-mile loop option, the Double Deuce.
On-site rider registration will be at the festival from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and riders can get started any time during those hours. The rest stop for the 55-mile route will be at the Vinton County Airport, and it will be set up until 2:00 pm. There will be a rider sweep of both the 55 and 22 miles routes, but no SAG support. You can view the route and download the GPX file from RidewithGPS.com
The self-guided, self-paced ride is included in the price of the festival admission fee, and includes a map of the ride, marked turns on the roads and the aid station with snacks and water.
