Folks,

On the topic of integration: accounting systems.

This has come up recently in a couple of off-line discussions. The
suggestion in both was that ATHENA Tix 1.0 will need to support
integration with a commercial accounting system. Specifically, it was
suggested that we should integrate with Quickbooks.

So, questions:

1. Do you agree?

2. What does this integration look like? What goes from the ticketing
system to the accounting system? Obviously records of purchases and
returns, but something else too? Such as: should whether or not a
ticket was used appear in the accounting system?

3. If we had to pick one system to integrate with at 1.0, is
Quickbooks the right one?

1) Maybe...
2) The only thing I could see would be a link to take you from the
Athena transaction to the Quickbooks transaction. Quickbooks should
already be getting this information from the bank.

I'm currently just doing a reconciliation report of all credit card
transactions that can be bounded by days and exported to csv and haven't
had any complaints.

Unless are you saying that things like comps should potentially be
recorded in quickbooks as a business loss of some sort? That might be
interesting.

3) From my experience yes.

By "a link", do you mean something like a reference number? Obviously you
can't hyperlink to a QB transaction.

Not a bad idea, but would probably have to be configurable. Also we'd need
to look into the accounting rules on something like that.

No, since it's not financial data.

Do any of the major accounting programs have an API that can be used
to integrate into ATHENA? The only potential drawback I can see if
inadvertently setting up a most favored nations scenario for a
commercial program but accounting integration would be a wonderful
feature (especially if it can generate a standard set of user defined
reports).

Quickbooks does have an API, but it's a bit of a nightmare to work with.
I'm sure some of the other platforms (that mainly target larger
organizations) also have APIs, but I don't have any first-hand experience
with them.
