Cradle of the Silver Dollar: The largest silver mine in the world was once in Schwaz, Tyrol. According to legend, a maid saw a bull digging up the ground, exposing ore-bearing rock. With the mining of silver and copper from 1410, Schwaz experienced a 200-year heyday at the turn of the Middle Ages to modern times. In 1488, the German merchant family Fugger from Augsburg bought shares in the mine and made an annual profit of 200,000 guilders.
