Apologies if this was posted to the wrong board, Trance..

Originally, this was specific (sort of) to AvC, and more specifically, "
How to Win Informal Arguments and Debates" by Klytu.  When I log into AvC that topic is perched at the top, with the little gray push pin icon. My rational being I must have clicked on something to pin the topic - what I couldn't imagine.   Eventually, the issue has morphed into a more general question.  After some web-searching pinning/unpinning seems to have been a topic that has popped up a few times.

From what little  I could find - and I'll admit the information has been sparse - apparently, at one time you (meaning anyone?) could pin topics in Google Groups so they showed up at the top of the group page. I assume this was to make it easier to follow topics of particular interest.  I could pin topics that were of  interest to me, and you could pin different topics that were of interest to you, etc.  I stumbled across a very short post in another group that mentioned clicking on the topic in question and by the group name right-click to find a pin/unpin feature.  I haven't found anything

Now,  I could be completely wrong.  I didn't see anything that specifically said it was restricted to moderators only, but like I said the information was pretty vague.  And of course this feature may have once been available to all and now has been removed or restricted by Google.  If it's a moderator-only feature that explains why I can't find anything to pin/unpin a specific topic.

No. That's pinned to the board by either the Moderators or the Owners. I think I pinned that because it's helpful to new members but I could change that and just post a link to the Mod Forum which repeats all those types of posts.

As far as I know only Mods/Owners can do it but I don't doubt someone has come up with a hack. Lol. I had one in GreaseMonkey which allowed me to block certain posters here.

A GreaseMonkey script is probably the way to go if you're looking for a technical solution that you can control.

Well there may be two kinds of pinning.

One that is done by Admins and is visible to everyone (which you wouldn't be able to control without a GreaseMonkey script assuming one exists).

Two that is done by User and only applies to their interface.

And check out the buttons at the top called 'Filters' there are various options available to you to control your interface, set favorites, etc. These will only impact how you see the site.

You won't be able to unpin that topic because it was pinned by a Mod.

If you're interested in looking at the GreaseMonkey scripts http://wiki.greasespot.net/Greasemonkey_Manual:Installing_Scripts

GreaseMonkey has both Chrome and FF versions.

Kitty;

Thanks for the speedy response.  That explains the "mysterious" push pin icon  :) and why I can't seem to find anything to unpin the topic.  I appreciate the GreaseMonkey script suggestion, but I can easily live with things as they are. Left to my own devices there's no telling  catastrophic damage I would end up doing to my PC once I start loading scripts.  At least now I know it wasn't something I accidentally turned on.

On a side note -  I hope life in general has been treating you well.  I haven't seen you much on AvC lately, but then again, I haven't been as active recently as I have in the past.  Damn work keeps getting in the way of having fun. Take care.

Best wishes,

Steve

Thx Steve. I'm around and doing Moderator stuff. I'm just not posting much. I needed a break from posting and took one.

Would love to return AvC to it's former glory but I'm not sure that's possible anymore.

Best wishes to you and yours. It's always a pleasure reading your posts and debates.
