Hi Everyone,
I intend to buy a Mac Book. But i don't know which one to buy. I want it to be able to run all major ATG modules, such as Commerce, Merchandizing, Service & Search. Also, i don't know whether ATG works on 32 bit or 64 bit machine ... I'm looking out for a MAC in medium range (in terms of budget).

Would appreciate any extra comments, coz i have to ensure i'm able to run ATG on it.

Need urgent help guys ...

Hi

ATG search does not run on mac. As far as I know most others do (not sure about reporting). Further depending on your ATG version you may need to install Java 1.5, which is no longer supported in OS X 1.7 (Lion)
After working with ATG / mac for 4 years already I'm happy with the combination... using eclipse, DBVisualizer (Toad replacement :-), java, ATG, Oxygen (XML editing) and several other tools

Note: one other tool you cannot run (simply) is Oracle, but we always used shared remote DB until now, or MySQL for development

Hey Wilco , thank you for your prompt reply & for sharing your expertise. I also wanted to know, whether i could do iPhone app development in eclipse or do I need to use Mac X-Code for it.

Also, should I buy a 32 or 64 bit MAC ?

The new OS (and chipsets) are all 64 bit. You can run 32-bit or 64-bit java with a -d32 or -d64 flag

Hi,

If you are buying new MacBook Pro then it will support only support latest jdk (Ver: 1.6+).

I hava MacBook Pro & ACC of ATG 2007.1 is not working in my Mac because ATG 2007.1 required JDK 5 version to start ACC.

However you can have Window also using VMWare & their you have JDK 5 & 2007.1 ACC also.

Luckily, ATG10 does not require Java 5 any more.

I have had good results with running the portions of ATG environment
that do not work on OS-X inside VMWare Fusion Linux VM. As long as
your Mac has enough RAM (4 GB min, 8 GB recommended) and decent CPU
(i5 or better), works great.

ATG is not officially supported on MAC. For dev purposes you can make commerce work . Atg search doesnt run on mac.

As for oracle, I have used this to run it on Snow Leopard.
Unfortunately, it (as well as sqlplus client) are now broken in 10.7
Lion.
http://blog.rayapps.com/2009/09/14/how-to-install-oracle-database-10g-on-mac-os-x-snow-leopard/

Hopefully he will have an update soon. For now using CentOS Parallels
VM for Oracle.

A neat trick is to mount your VM's file structure to the same point on
your mac. So if you install ATG & Jobss under /opt, you can build &
deploy using eclipse and run jboss either right in OS X or on the VM.

You could also just set your search env up so you are connecting to a
remote search engine and point it at the IP of your VM, so you can do
most everything on your mac & just connect to the VM for queries &
indexing.

A VM with Oracle, plus Jboss (especially if running multiple
instances) plus running eclipse really wants all 8 GB of RAM if you
can swing it - well worth the money. An SSD helps make builds go much
faster as well.
