WhenI enable HDR on my Fios Mini it outputs Dolby Vision HDR instead of standard HDR which makes hdr programming look terrible.
I have another mini box where the tv does not support Dolby Vision and the HDR looks much better as it outputs normal HDR.
Is the content you are watching 4K HDR, or is it HD SDR? If it is HD, not 4K then you are causing incorrect color rendering by choosing to enable HDR on the mini. The ONLY time it should be enabled is when watching 4K HDR programming, the vast majority of which on Fios is HLG encoded, not Dolby Vision. Please turn off HDR when not watching 4K HDR programming. The VMS box will auto switch, but the mini is manual only.
I keep the HDR disabled on my mini box when watching regular HD content.
When I enable the HDR whenever there is 4K HDR content available on 1496 1498 or 1499, the box outputs Dolby Vision to my tv which makes the picture look terrible. I have another Fios Mini box with a tv that does not support Dolby Vision and the content looks 100X better.
The Fios Mini box is broken in that it outputs Dolby Vision even though HDR content is not Dolby Vision? Can this be fixed as it renders 4K HDR useless on Fios Mini boxes where the tv supports Dolby Vision.
I'll send this to support and see what they come up with. Does your TV support Dolby Vision or only other HDR formats? I know sometimes HDR, regardless of format can look unusually dark on many programs. I had to set up a special preset on my Sony TV to adjust for that, even though the TV was supposedly correctly adjusted for the HDR.
Thanks. I have talked to support on this too and they provided really dumb recommendations. Restart your box, and try a different HDMI cord. They are just giving me the runaround and insulting recommendations.
Going back and forth with support. So far I can tell you that the Fios linear channels only support HLG or HDR10, NO Dolby Vision. Looking into why the box seems to be outputting the wrong format. They say for now try toggling the HDR setting on the box.
Don't toggle it off for 4K on the 3 4K Fios channels. Just set your TV to HLG or HDR10 instead of letting it choose Dolby Vision. It SHOULD improve the PQ. You may also have to reboot the Fios box once you make those changes to your TV.
"If the TV says its preferred HDR format = DV in its EDID, then IPC conforms to such. It outputs "DV" always, just luminance mapped when not actually sourcing DV content. If the user can disable HDR on the HDMI input the IPC is connected on the display, that would prevent it as well."
I believe that it is a bug with your box that it is outputting dolby vision when the content doesn't support it. You cannot pick and chose which hdr flavor you want to use on your tv. None of my TVs have an option to change the hdr format. That's like telling a vhs to play as a dvd.
Of course you can choose what HDR format your TV will accept. On my Sony I have the option to choose DV, HDR10 OR HLG as the HDR format. Should have that option on other TVs too. You just have to disable the auto option in the HDR menu. Also it is NOT the way the mini is supposed to work, but unfortunately that is the way it currently works. If it senses the TV can accept DV, EVERYTHING is output in DV regardless of the true format. Not a feature by any means.
On my tv I do not have that option, it outputs to whatever signal it receives. Can you tell your tv to display picture in 720p if it receives a 4k or 1080p signal from netlfix, fios or anything for that matter? I think not.
In fact on some input devices like roku sticks, firestick etc you can tell it you want it to output. The fios box should be the same in regards to HDR if it does not automatically output the correct signal.
If this is a bug (which it seems to be), when will it be fixed as it has been an issue for years?
Strange, I'd have thought you would have control over the TV's decoding, much like you can tell a reciever to use Dolby or DTS for audio decoding. The Sony I have and the one before it have a menu item that allows for HDR to be decoded automatically, in HDR10, DV or HLG. Just thought that was standard on almost all TV's, my bad. agree with you on the mini, you should be able to choose, and it is an omission, but most people would probably screw it up anyway. And yes, it does bother support the mini decodes EVERYTHING as DV where the VMS does the correct thing.
I'd dig deeper into the TVs menus to see if there is a way to get it to only show HLG or HDR10. Failing that can you swap boxes between the VMS and the mini? Since the VMS does the right decoding, it might work better with that TV. Other than that, you are stuck waiting for an update to fix the issue on the Fios Mini.

I have the new Apple TV 2022 and the Hue Sync Box and I can't get it to work with Dolby Vision. It works fine with HDR10+ (and every other version of HDR) and works fine with SDR, but when Dolby Vision is enabled it won't do anything. I have made sure to try both ports 2 and 4 on the Hue Sync and I'm using very high quality cables, but it still doesn't work. My Nvidia Shield Pro works just fine using the same setup, so it has to be an Apple TV issue. My TV is a series 6 TCL 2022 (r655).
I would like to report a problem that occurs since I updated the Apple tv 4k, when watching any video content, Prime Video, Netflix, Apple Tv etc, quite often, the image disappears and the screen goes black for a second or two approximately, also turning off the lights of the Sync box, and then reactivated.
Yep I tried that. They had a lot of suggestions but nothing worked. The reason I think it's an Apple TV issue is because my Shield Pro works perfectly using the exact same cables. I can literally take the HDMI cable out of the back of the Apple TV and plug it into the Shield Pro instead and Dolby Vision with Hue Sync works. I've made sure everything is updated and I've tried lots of different cables, HDMI ports, and even different streaming options that support DV like Netflix, Amazon prime, Apple TV, etc. I guess it's possible I got a broken Apple TV, but it's just odd that this is its only issue.
Since I replaced them with the newer model, the issue exists. The only workaround to get Hue Sync working is to set the video mode from ATV to 4K HD, but 4K Dolby Vision freeze immediately my HUE Sync
Yep, I have to do the same thing. I can set the apple tv to HDR10/10+ and it works, but unfortunately it still doesn't work with DV. I keep hoping an Apple TV update will fix the issue but nothing yet. So I'll stick with the Shield Pro for DV content in the meantime, which is obviously a pain
Unfortunately I have not found a fix for this. I got the cables recommended and that did nothing. I even used the exact cables and exact ports that I was using with my Nvidia Shield Pro (which works just fine with Hue Sync and Dolby Vision) and still nothing. It has to be an Apple TV issue since the Shield Pro works fine.
First, I purchased high quality HDMI cables that do 8K 60hz and 4K 120hz. I ran it from the sync box out to the tv, and from my apple TV to my sync box. I use port 2 or 4 as they work better with the dolby vision setting.
As odd as it seems, there are times when the lights just stop syncing randomly (after many hours of use) and I use an ice pack in a towel, and put it under the sync box. Yes it sounds strange but I swear after a few minutes the lights start syncing again. I don't touch any settings or tap the sync button when the lights stop syncing, I just use the ice pack.
