Bryson LaShun Potts[2] was born on November 1, 2002,[3] to an African American father and Jamaican mother.[4] He was raised in Southeast Memphis, Tennessee, in the Parkway Village area, and was also enrolled in Cordova High School where he played basketball.[5][6] He began freestyling with childhood friends at the age of 15 and started taking music seriously at 16.[7]
Now 17 years old, NLE Choppa is closing out the year with a series of hit singles, a joint venture with Warner Records, a deal with UnitedMasters, and a forthcoming EP called Cottonwood. The EP was named after the block in Memphis where Choppa grew up.
Cottonwood is named after the block where you grew up. Why was it important to title your EP that?
It's just my first [project] and that was where I was first born. This is where life was given to me.
The former XXL Freshman is living up to his perceived success. Over the years, the young rapper has worked with various different artists, collaborating on fire tracks. NLE Choppa has built an impressive discography, and interestingly enough, some of his best songs are collabs.
His Spotify channel has over 22 million monthly listeners, with his most-listened to songs earning almost half-a-billion plays each. Across all platforms, his music has over 3 billion cumulative streams.
This August, he released Top Shotta, an album packed with 20 songs ranging from hype to emotionally raw. Making the album was about a two-year process. It was towards the end, Choppa said, that he found meditation and, through it, much more.
