We have:
-Netware 4.11
-100mbit card in the server
-3com ss2 24 port full switched 10/100 hub
-workstations with a mix of older 10 and newer 10/100 3com cards
-win 95
sporadically and without any apparent commonality i.e time of day, 100% of
the users affected, etc.
Out of 20 workstations 8 seperate pc's will sporadically lock for up to
30sec one has even received the client message to wait while it retries a
request to the server.

What's the server utilisation?

Have a look at monitor and see what process is hogging the CPU, if it's sat
at 100%
Check the number of dirty cache buffers, are they unusually high?
Check the disks. Maybe you are getting some physical errors and the server
is working overtime on the hotfix

I talked with a frequently locking user and watching the server stats'
there no even the slightest increase of utilization or of any other resource
during the locks.
I am presently going to look into the ipx and ip traffic as well as the port
stats on one of our hubs, but I think this is reaching.

Thanks!

I too have these problems. IBM Netfinity 5000, Raid5, Sisco Switches:
For no reason I can find all at once the users can not log in, work stations
freeze, and all stops. When the login problem starts, I can't kill
connections at the console because when I try, monitor freezes. After that
if I try to down the server, it gets to the point of notifing stations and
then the only way out is to turn off the power. Reboot the server and all
is well for who knows how long.

This is happening on four servers at four locations. The only common is
that all four have a discview cd server attachached. Other servers in the
system don't have this problem.

As a test I disonnected the cd server on one server. After a reboot all
went well for about 2 hours. Then the same problem.

Just a quick thought after looking at Novell's web page yesterday.

Are you ising Win 95/98 ZEN client 3.1?

If you are, there is an issue regarding some circumstances (the TID didn't
explain which ones) where the client will open multiple copies of the same
file on the server, and close just one. Eventually the server will hang.

If this is the case, you will need the client service pack 2. NW 4.x
servers will need to be patched (patch included in SP7) as well.

I haven't got the exat URL, but if you look at the top 1200 tech docs, you
will probably see it somewhere in the top 10 !

After a few test I have decided the problem lies in the discview software
that controls the procom cd server.
As a test I remed the discport command in the autoexec.ncf, downed the
server, powered off the procom tower, and restarted the server. All ran
great for a day and 1/2. I then reconnected the procom cd server and
started the discport software on the server. All is well. Now, it is time
to mount a new cdrom. while trying to mount the cd discview can not find
it. Discview will loose all the cd's in the tower if I refresh. After I
get the cd's mounted and mapped, about 10 min. later the clients can login.
The win95 stations freeze and the only way to correct the problem is to down
the server and bring it back up. It I don't do anything else all the cd's
mount and all is well until I try to use discview.
