I have bougth an Omnibook XE3 Silver Edition, brand new model, Tualatin
Core, FSB133, nice thing, good price. I will give a short overview what is
needed for basic Linux operation based on SuSE 7.3 professional
I limit on Display, Sound and Network. If you have this you can work with
the Notebook. Other things like TV Out, CDRW, etc. are things that I haven't
yet tested, they can be tested/configured/researched anytime as long as one
can access the net with the laptop and have a good desktop (and hears his
favourite MP3s ;-).
The Notebook installs flawless. But then you have no network, no audio and
800x600 resolution.
For network you go to:
http://appsr.intel.com/scripts-df/Detail_Desc.asp?ProductID=407&DwnldID=2896
and download the Driver for Intel Pro /100VE. Compile it as module -
description is well done in the readme-file.
For Resolution you need go to:
http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/intel830M/tti013.htm because the new
Omnibooks with the strong 1066mhz Tualatin P3 have the new Intel 830MG
Graphics-Chip and no Savage Card anymore.
For Audio you do not need to install anything, you just need to go to the
control center -> YaST2 modules -> Hardware -> Sound and go through the
Soundconfiguration ONCE. For I do not know why you will need a reboot before
you hear something, at least I do not know how to activate it - who cares
for one more reboot during installation anyhow. If you do not hear
something, check the mixer. The Sound is named "ES1988 Allegro" (ESS
Allegro).
Reading Data from CDRom or DVD-Rom is no problem, btw. I booted and
installed SuSE 7.3 (full) from DVD Rom without trouble.
Standby works in both ways (i.e. it wakes up again from standby)
APM Batterycontrol seems to work.
What not (yet) works:
My first "Attempt" to access my Win2K-Network failed. Samba is obviously not
something you configure without any doc reading ...
The Hibernation seems to work but does not wake up anymore. You need to
"Needle-Reset" the notebook (the small hole on the left side)
I can not compile a kernel and do not know why. It seems to make everything
but then says "error 2" at the end. No new kernel. I do not think this is a
hardware related task but as long as I do not find out why this happens, I
can not totally exclude this possibility.
The Notebook does not react on the Volume-set by the FN+Cursor-Keys. You
need the GUI Mixer or the Player Volume control to do this.
Everything not mentioned I simply haven't tried yet. I just have it since
last Saturday and I am totally new to Linux.
have fun, Walter.

sicher was :-)

wieder einschalten solltest? (sonst kann man sich nämlich auch ganz
herrlich die Festplatte zerschiessen)

Glaskugel: Dir fehlt ncurses(-dev)

Can anyone translate this please?
andere (TV-Out, CDRW, etc) spaeter in Ruhe kuemmern.
http://appsr.intel.com/scripts-df/Detail_Desc.asp?ProductID=407&DwnldID=2896
http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/intel830M/tti013.htm
durchlaufen:
control center -> YaST2 modules -> Hardware -> Sound
Standby funktioniert.
APM Batterieladezustandskontrolle scheint auch zu funktionieren
(Noch) nicht funktioniert:
Mein erster Versuch, auf mein Win2K Netz zuzugriefen. Aber das war ein
Schnellschuss ohne Lesen von Doku. Out of the Box gehts jedenfalls nicht
ohne Aufwand offenbar.
have fun, Walter.
here comes the

fascinating that with each new notebook vendors choose hardware that is
not yet supported by linux. ( happened with my soundchip and networkchip )

could be that if you configured the samba-server under linux correctly,
the problems lie in unencrypted passwords on the windows side. ( the
documentation of samba?/Win2k? should be usefull for that - i dont know how
it works with win2k )

do you know that you wake up from hibernation by:
- pressing the on/off button
- pressing the blue moon-shaped button in the middle of the display
(else you could mess up your filesystem and harddisk)

my magic-sphere says you are missing ncurses-(dev).rpm

my documentation of the XE3 tells me these buttons trigger the volume-control
of the speaker, not the soundcard.

Fascinating? What is fascinating? Sorry but I don't understand german.
Would be interested in what you said.
For those interested, I posted how I solved the problem of RECENT HP
omnibook XE3 for redhat 7.1.
You can find it under google newsgroup: "X server on HP OmniBook XE3 laptop"
My only probem was with the graphic drive and solved without any patch
using frame buffer, waiting for XFree 4.2 to use the proper 830MG driver.

xfree 4.2 is out =)
Where ??? xfree.org says (from Dec. 17th 2001):
"The 4.2.0 release has been delayed by a few month for various reasons. For
now we are not able to provide a new schedule."

All you really need to do on SuSE 7.3 is to put into /etc/modules.conf the
alias eth0 e100
It is not necessary to download the driver, compile and "install" it.
have fun, W.

Please let me make clear that this Omnibook XE3 is a fine, affordable
High-End Notebook. It is imho superior to all NBs that I compared it with at
a reasonable price. The sad thing is, that it is not well supported by
actual Linux distributions. So in my opinion I would not recommend it as
Linux Notebook. I would however, recommend it as Windows Notebook, that is
for what it is designed.
And I blame HP only for one thing: They should have named it XE4 - this
would have avoided a lot of confusion.

Does this mean you have an XE3 like mine running? If so, what does lspci
show?

In the meantime I was able to build a kernel and run it but it is still not
working well, I tried 2.4.17. Yes, I ran through these steps, my mistake was
to use the "kernel configurator" instead of "make xconfig".
> As for the USB there are two

UHCI is what I am using.

I gave up. I have measured performance, the Bridge is not supported
(unknown) and the machine as whole seems to be dead slow under Linux. I
played with hdparm -c1 -A1 -d1 /dev/hda and performance increased a little
bit. Overall the system seems to be running with brakes engaged all the
time, so I give up.

Slow.
