Can I use titles instead of captions for List of Figures/Tables?

My adviser taught me to write long captions for tables and figures. Now those long captions are taking up a lot of space in the index and it just looks odd. In a couple occasions, an entire page is used up by one entry in the list. Do I trim the captions or is there an alternate way to give each table or figure a short title and have that appear in the index? Is there anything official from ASU about what goes in the List of Figures/Tables?

Thanks

In general,

\caption[The content stated here goes in the TOC]{The content stated here goes in the main text.}
