Dear Astropy contributors,

I hope you are doing well!

My name is Jiayi Sun and I am a PhD student in the ECE department at the University of Toronto (UofT). Currently, we are conducting a research study to understand how large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT or Copilot, might affect the practices of developing scientific software. Specifically, we are conducting interview studies to understand the practices and challenges of leveraging such AI-assisted tools to complete various programming tasks. The objective is to explore opportunities to facilitate better workflow and higher-quality code design in scientific software development.

This study is in collaboration with my supervisor, Prof. Shurui Zhou, Prof. Ishtiaque Ahmed (UofT), and Prof. Dakuo Wang (Northeastern University). The study has received approval from both the Research Ethics Board at UofT and Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Northeastern University.

If you’re interested participate in our interview study, please kindly fill out this sign-up survey before our interview to make the discussion more efficient. We will thank every interview participant with an Amazon gift card or donation of $20 USD value after finishing the 45-60min interview.

We would also appreciate if you could spread this email to other researchers and scientific communities. Thank you for your attention and time!

Best regards

Jiayi Sun
