Does Astropy support XISF file format

I am new to this group. I use PixInsight to process Astro images. The PixInsight Dev Team has adopted the XISF file format as their standard several years ago. Apparently the XISF format offers some advantages over the FIT format. 

I would like to create a Python script that can read the "FITS" header information stored in these XISF files in order to extract specific information from multiple files. I know that Astropy can read the FITS header information form FIT files, but not sure it will work with XISF. If anyone knows if Astropy can extract this data from XISF files, please let me know.

Hi Andrew,

Astropy does not support the XISF format. If somebody is interested in writing an implementation to support XISF then that would be a welcome addition to the Astropy ecosystem, initially as an affiliated package.
