Thanks to William Jamieson’s work, astropy on main has dropped support for numpy 1.21 (slated for astropy v6.0). This is in accordance to https://github.com/astropy/astropy-APEs/blob/main/APE18.rst .

tl;dr -- astropy v6 will only support numpy 1.22 or later
