astropy v8.0.0 feature freeze on 1 May 2026

Hi all,

The feature freeze for v8.0.0 of the core package will be on 1 May 2026.

There are currently over 100 open pull requests milestoned for v8.0.0, so please try and wrap up any open pull requests if possible, or re-milestone to v8.1.0 if you are pretty sure you won't manage to wrap up a pull request in time.

I'd really like that https://github.com/astropy/astropy/pull/19575 gets a shot for astropy 8.0, because it looks increasingly clear to me that it won't be possible to solve all known bugs/quirks with the dir discovery system without also changing the behavior of existing APIs. It's a major effort but I'm nearing convergence and I think it'd be a shame to delay it by a year or longer.

Of course the issue is that:

- the PR is already pretty big (and might get slightly bigger still)

- the only other maintainer who's already expert enough to review this relatively quickly would be Pey Lian

- she won't be available until the end of the month

this will leave very little time to get a proper review from her. There are a couple solutions though:

1) someone else steps up to review this beast

2) we postpone the feature freeze by a week or two

I'm sorry I couldn't get this project going earlier as I initially planned.

Hi everyone,

if possible I would like to get these two PRs into this milestone, but I need a review to finish them:

- ENH: Expose `MplQuantityConverter` and except arrays in `convert` and `default_units` by Julian-Harbeck · Pull Request #19539 · astropy/astropy: I still need to add tests and an entry to the change log, but this makes only sense if the proposed changes are excepted.

- DOC/TST: `console` and `unicode` formatting support roundtrip by Julian-Harbeck · Pull Request #19571 · astropy/astropy: Should be straight forward, it just updates the documentation and adds a test.
