I'd really like that
https://github.com/astropy/astropy/pull/19575 gets a shot for astropy 8.0, because it looks increasingly clear to me that it won't be possible to solve all known bugs/quirks with the dir discovery system
without also changing the behavior of existing APIs. It's a major effort but I'm nearing convergence and I think it'd be a shame to delay it by a year or longer.
Of course the issue is that:
- the PR is already pretty big (and might get slightly bigger still)
- the only other maintainer who's already expert enough to review this relatively quickly would be Pey Lian
- she won't be available until the end of the month
this will leave very little time to get a proper review from her. There are a couple solutions though:
1) someone else steps up to review this beast
2) we postpone the feature freeze by a week or two
I'm sorry I couldn't get this project going earlier as I initially planned.
