Hello there,

I hope I'm in right place for this kind of question.

First of all thanks for the amazing libraries (astropy, astroquery and others) for bringing the beauty of astronomy to everyone's life - being programmer or not :)
I'm still learning astronomy and other related fields so I apologize in advance if my question sounds beginner-ish :)

So, I'm in process of developing desktop application using astroquery and I would like to know if there is any way to check type of queried object (if it is star or nebula or exoplanet or galaxy etc.)?I'm talking about SIMBAD object classification which is on following address :

Furthermore there is this search result , querying 'Aldebaran' star for example :

I would like to know, if there is possibility to obtain information marked with red ( in this case 'Long Period Variable candidate') when querying objects using SIMBAD?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Civa

You can use the add_votable_field mechanism described here:

for example:

from astroquery.simbad import Simbad
Simbad.add_votable_fields('otype')
Simbad.query_object("M31")

MAIN_ID      RA          DEC      ... COO_WAVELENGTH     COO_BIBCODE     OTYPE
          "h:m:s"      "d:m:s"    ...
 object  unicode13    unicode13   ...    unicode1           object       object
------- ------------ ------------ ... -------------- ------------------- ------
  M  31 00 42 44.330 +41 16 07.50 ...              I 2006AJ....131.1163S Galaxy
