Hi everyone,

At the Astropy coordination meeting in September, we discussed the new format/plan for the Astropy Project roadmap. During discussions, we concluded that we would survey maintainers and contributors to get community input on each objective’s relative priority. So here is the survey:

https://forms.gle/EbhCER2nGGwicLm37

The idea here is to prioritize how important you think each objective is specifically for 2027 (so there might be some important longer term objectives, but which ones should we be addressing in 2027?). We plan to pick the highest priority objectives and flesh out key results for these, and this will feed into Cycle 6 (where, as in previous years, projects that address high priority objectives could be ranked higher).

Please fill out the survey by Friday 16th October 2026, and don't hesitate to reply to this thread if you have any questions. Thank you for your patience and participation as we work on improving the project prioritization process.

Thanks!
Tom for the SPOC

Hi Tom et al.,

Won't be very useful if I label everything high priority. What is the breakdown that would be logical for SPOC? :)

Thank you,
Pey Lian

Yes, Pey Lian, you're right that it's not useful to mark everything as high priority. However, there's also no "logical" ranking distribution. Some folks might only have 1-2 high priority items, with the rest being low priority. I think the useful thing to keep in mind is that we're aiming for only ~5 objectives for the next year.

Hope that helps and thank you for your participation and engagement in this process!

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder about the survey for determining the priority of objectives for the project:

Please complete this by the end of the day on Friday 16th October 2026 (tomorrow). This is your chance to influence project priorities for 2027!

Thanks,
Tom for the SPOC
