We are pleased to welcome Beryl Kanali (Beryl is pronounced as beh·ruhl) to Astropy! Beryl will be taking up the role of community manager, working to grow, manage and support the Astropy Project Community.

About Beryl KanaliHeadshot Beryl.jpg

Beryl is an experienced Community Manager, having worked with open source projects and communities like PyMC and Data Umbrella. She is passionate about growing communities, promoting diversity and inclusion in open source projects and improving access to open science.

She gained interest in community management after contributing to open source projects and experiencing the power of communities in building robust, sustainable software.

She holds a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Computer Science. She also likes Data Science and using data to solve real world problems, which led her to explore open science projects and ignited her passion for open science communities.

Beryl’s positive experiences with open projects motivated her to take on this new role. "Open source communities have been a huge asset for me in terms of building my skills and career. Combined with the Astropy community's commitment to supporting diversity and inclusion, I was immediately drawn to apply for this position and join Astropy. I am looking forward to working with the Astropy team and Organizational Mycology to drive the Astropy community forward."

Beryl will be working alongside Jonah Duckles, Dan Sholler and Beth Duckles from Organizational Mycology, a consulting firm that works with open science and open source software communities. They conduct research that informs community efforts to enhance engagement and build community-specific governance capacity. In the next few months, they will be conducting research–including interviews with Astropy community members–to support Beryl’s work as Community Manager.
