She was just paying attention to the things she enjoyed. As a result of that, after about ten years working as an engineer at Kennedy Space Center she thought about applying to be an astronaut.
At NASA, she would get space shuttles ready for crews and start to build the hardware for the space station. She realized that 99.99% of an astronaut's job is not flying in space. It's here on Earth.
As best she could tell, the majority of it was a lot like she was already doing.
It was mentors who gave her permission to pick up the pen and fill out the application. They didn't discourage her in any way. Her mentors put her in the place where she felt she could pick up the pen and apply.
