While Winston Scott was sitting around his dinner table with his wife and a friend, he made the offhanded remark that you know I always thought I'd like to be an astronat. They looked at him. And, the way he heard it was. You really ought to apply. The next day his commanding officer gave him the same idea.

It just so happens that NASA was taking applications the next few months. He decided he would try one time and see what happens. He submitted his application. The entire process took about a year and a half to narrow it down from the thousands that submitted to the nineteen that were selected.

He says. He was very very fortunate to have been selected on his first application. He was in the Navy about 18 years when selected.

Question: Tell me just about that beginning, how does one get selected in the world of NASA?

Answer: I was selected through the Navy. I flew for the Navy for 12 years as an operational pilot. That means I was training for combat. Then I got off into the Research and Development side of flying which means we were testing and evaluating new systems and new programs.

And that’s what led me to be selected by NASA for astronaut training.
