ConnectionError and submission fails

Hi there,

I've recently been having a lot of issues with making submissions via python using the astroquery.astrometry_net module. The code that I've been using has remained consistent, yet every submission attempt results in the following error: 

ConnectionError: ('Connection aborted.', RemoteDisconnected('Remote end closed connection without response'))

Uploading my submissions via nova.astrometry.net also takes MUCH longer than it did in the past. I've even attempted to resubmit files that I've successfully solved in the past, but some of them are failing now. It doesn't seem to be a network issue on my end. 

I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to fix these issues?

Hi Emily,

The best luck I have had in terms of reliability of solve is to install the CLI tool, install the indices and use Python subprocess module to interact with the CLI tooling.

Hopefully that all makes sense and can point you in the right direction!

Hi,

I'm sorry for the trouble.  None of the server-side code has changed recently, though since it the service lives at a supercomputing center, there may have been some (hopefully unintended) changes to the networking setup, firewalls, etc.

I presume you're uploading image files?  Could you tell me how big the files are?  And how long they take to upload when/if they complete successfully?  Also, if you can send a link to an example image/submission.

Normally, uploading an image will either result in a successful solve, or not, consistently.  The exception is ones that are right on the edge of timing out after 10 minutes.  We use a CPU-time cap, but in practice load on memory, etc, can mean that this isn't a completely well-defined thing.

 NOT complaining at all and am very grateful for this service. 

I use it very rarely but when I need to for the one-off (1 or 2 times biweekly. I would say over the past 6 weeks it is slower but not by much and there have been 1 or 2 times it just didn’t give a response. Always use it from the website by uploading image to website and waiting for results

Thanks for the feedback.  It sounds like I should put in some automated monitoring to understand the usual performance and catch problems.
