An obvious WIBNI: add an option to solve-field et al.
--xscale scalefactor
where scalefactor is either 8.6x8.3 or 1.036 for the image in
question. Detecting either form should be easy enough (does it
contain 'x').

Okay, that fixes it --
I trimmed the bottom off, and then scaled it horizontally by 1.036
(fitstopnm 1.fits | pnmscale -xscale 1.036 | ppmtopgm | pnmtofits > 2.fits)
And I get this solution:
