Today, around 6.30 pm, it was extraordinarily cloudless and the moon had not risen by then. The sky was really clear, and upon careful viewing, I could faintly make out the Milky Way band. It was the first time I had seen it with my naked eyes and it was a wish come true. This, after the rainbow in the evening today!

By the time I got back to my hall and got someone with a nice camera, the bright full moon had already risen. Some clouds had also gathered. Never before have I been saddened on seeing the full moon.

Anyway, we tried to click the galaxy with high exposure and got this.Inline images 1

Not very convincing, but the clouds on the side, which tend to hide the stars, can be distinguished from the galaxy glow, which is behind the stars.

The moon rise today was at 6.53 pm. It sets at 7 am tomorrow, so won't be able to view it again in the morning. But tomorrow evening, the moon sets at 7.36 pm. If it is cloudless again, maybe one can watch it then. :)

Hi Lakshya,

I'm afraid that it's a pretty cloudy day in my city today. I was looking forward to seeing the Milky Way band today but I don't think that'll be possible now. Best of luck.

Small request, if you get the pic today, do remember to post it here. Try going to the centre of TSC. Most amazing stargazing environment and very dark area in Kgp.

Best of luck.

This time I checked with Stellarium that I was really looking at the galaxy and not some random clouds (or simply my imagination, because the glow was indeed very faint). Turned out I was right, so off we (Aurko - my photographer friend - and I) went again, this time before the moon rise. Exceptionally cloudless again. (Thanks for the luck Vishal!)
