Subject: Job Posting at Guilford Technical Community College
To: astro...@googlegroups.com <astro...@googlegroups.com>

Hi everyone,

Guilford Technical Community College in Greensboro, North Carolina is searching for a full-time Astronomy instructor.  We are one of the largest community colleges in the state and have a well-established astronomy program that supports two full-time astronomy positions (of which I am the other). We offer a two course introductory astronomy sequence with associated labs, and an Observational Astronomy course focused on telescopes.  Our department is also dedicated to being a leader in our local astronomy community, hosting several events each semester including TriStar, a regional amateur astronomy festival, and the North Carolina Astronomers’ Meeting, a scientific conference that brings members of the N.C. professional astronomy community together to network and share research.

In addition our school is home to the Cline Observatory, which is dedicated to public outreach.  Our primary instrument is a 24-inch Planewave CDK telescope in a 6 meter dome.  The observatory is dedicated to being open every clear Friday night, year round, and is considered a valuable resource in our community.  We regularly have 50+ visitors at our Friday night observing sessions.

The duties of the instructor would include teaching 3 class sections and their associated labs per semester.  This person would also be the Director of the Cline observatory, and be responsible for planning and hosting our observatory events.

We are looking for someone dedicated to teaching at the community college level and who also has experience with telescopes and leading public outreach events.  A Master’s Degree in Astronomy (or related field) is required.

I’ve been at GTCC teaching astronomy for 18 years now, and I love the community that we are a part of.  We have an awesome facility that is really unique for a community college and a great group of students.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions about the position!
