Join us in Pupin Hall on Friday August 8 at 7pm in Pupin 301 by postdoc Dr. Catherine Manea on Galactic Archaeology in the Big Data Era of Astronomy. (Poster attached)
Abstract: “Galactic archaeology is a powerful approach to studying the Milky Way. In this method, stars act as fossils, and their chemical compositions provide insights into our galaxy’s history and structure. The current era of big data in astronomy, driven by surveys measuring the compositions of billions of stars across the Milky Way, is transforming our understanding of how galaxies form and evolve. In this talk, Catherine will explore how Galactic archaeology sheds light on the origins of the chemical elements, the processes driving star formation, and the evolution of the Milky Way’s disk.”
We'll start the evening at 7pm with some astronomy trivia, followed by Catherine’s talk and Q&A. From 8:10-9:10pm, we will be outside observing on campus (weather permitting).
If you do not have a CUID or would like to bring someone who doesn’t have one, please follow the instructions and register here by August 6 midnight.
If you would like to help us run the event, we are looking to fill all the volunteer positions highlighted here
