This is because in this installation script Fail2Ban comes up with a configuration error.

Remove it and reinstall with the following commands:

apt-get remove

fail2ban apt-get autoremove

rm -rf /etc/fail2ban/

apt-get install fail2ban

I had the same problem and fixed it this way, I hope it helps.
