CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

AST 2010

Fifth International Workshop on Automation of Software Test
http://www.cs.allegheny.edu/ast2010

Cape Town, South Africa, 3-4 May 2010

part of ACM/IEEE ICSE 2010 (http://www.sbs.co.za/ICSE2010)

Special Theme Charette Discussion: Integration Testing
Special Session: Business and Industrial Case Studies

IMPORTANT DATES
===============

Early registration: Until 28 February 2010
Late and Onsite Registration: After 28 February 2010
Workshop dates: 3-4 May 2010

In software development practice, testing often accounts for as much
as 50% of the total development effort. It is therefore imperative to
reduce the cost and improve the effectiveness of software testing by
automating the testing process. In the past decades, a substantial
amount of research effort has been invested into the development and
study of automatic test case generation, automatic test oracles, and
other (semi-)automated testing techniques. As the theory and practice
of software testing becomes more mature, a deeper and more meaningful
automation of the testing process is possible. Therefore, the
automation of various testing activities is now becoming an integral
part of industrial practice. In response to and in support of these
exciting developments, the 5th Workshop on the Automation of Software
Test provides a publication forum that bridges the gap between the
theory and practice of automated testing.

PROGRAM
=======

The workshop is the successor of the first four AST workshops held at
the International Conference on Software Engineering from 2006 to
2009. It provides researchers and practitioners a forum for
exchanging ideas and experiences, developing an understanding of the
fundamental challenges, articulating a vision for the future, and
finding promising solutions to pressing problems. It aims at bridging
the gap between theory and practice in order to improve the current
state of practice and to foster innovative research in the area The
workshop also provided a platform for researchers and developers of
testing tools to work together in an attempt to identify the problems
in the theory and practice of software test automation and to lay the
foundation for future development. The workshop accepted contributions
of four different types: research papers, case study papers, case
study presentations, and posters. Research papers will report on
original research and practical experience. Selected papers will cover
the following area of software test automation:

- Model-based testing
- Coverage-based testing
- Performance testing
- Test oracles
- Test case generation
- Test plan generation
- Debugging

The case study session will report on the practical application of
software test automation. Selected case study contributions will
provide practical and generalizable insights into how to apply and
extend existing approaches to automated software testing. Accepted
posters will describe late breaking results or works in progress. The
final program will be available at the workshop website
http://www.cs.allegheny.edu/ast2010/.

CHARETTE: INTEGRATION TESTING
=============================

The AST 2010 workshop will run a multi-day charette that considered
the most immediate challenges in the field of integration testing. The
charette session has two purposes: stimulating near-term research and
fostering group discussion and cooperation among participants. The
charette shall identify the key aspects of automated integration
testing that are worth research efforts in the near future. The
conference organizers will ask participants to envision approaches
that address these aspects and formed potential collaborations in
order to solve the identified problems more effectively.

KEYNOTES
========

The keynote speakers of this year are Willem Visser and Steve Quam.

Willem Visser is currently a Full Professor of Computer Science and
Head of the Computer Science Division at Stellenbosch University in
South Africa. Willem has held positions at the Research Institute for
Advanced Computer Science (RIACS) where he conducted collaborative
work with the Robust Software Engineering group at the NASA Ames
Research Center.

Steve Quam is the Vice President of Engineering for Imaging Systems
and Recording Systems in the Angiography Division of Siemens Medical
Solutions. He has over 20 years experience leading various technical
disciplines in the Defense and Medical industries. Steve has
experience in Process Improvement, Software Off-shoring, and Project
Management. He helped lead the first Siemens Medical to group to
achieve CMM level 4, and has also helped lead another organization to
CMMi level 3.

REGISTRATION
============

The early conference registration is already open and provides
substantial savings in comparison to registrations on the day. There
are also tailored participant packages as much as possible to suit
your varying needs and project purposes. To register online please
visit the registration page on the conference website
http://www.sbs.co.za/ICSE2010/registration/register.html. The website
also contains a page listing the registration fees, where you can
review prices and rates.
