Here comes the season to get the Christmas spirit. This is the time
to sing carols in church. Morever, I love to sing harmony to pretty
hymns like Christmas carols. Too bad that in Catholic churches we don't
sing them during this season; all we have are those hideous advent
songs. So during advent I visit one of the Protestant churches in the
area. When I go to such a service I do not also attend the Catholic
church on the same day. I'm convinced that skipping Sunday mass is a
less serious failing if I attend another Christian church instead.
Ah, I remember when we were kids going to public shcool. Every
shcool day began with a brief devotional period in the auditorium where
they read a few verses from the King James bible, sang a couple of
hymns, and said a few inspiritional words. Our priest wouldn't let us
attend the devotionals! If you live in a place that has a Methodist or
Baptist church but no Catholic church within reasonable distance, back
before Vatican II the priests said Catholics just don't go to church in
that case. Even in those days, thier position was hard to believe.

I agree.  The only Christmas song I know they do.is 'O come Emmanual",.  The others are songs I never heard before, being played on a guitar and occasionally sung (?) by a girl whose high notes cause one to cringe.  It's so sad, good for patience and learning to tolerate though, in this age, where it seems we are to be entertained from the altar, instead of a gentle loving worship.
I find small towns or little country towns offer the best Catholic services, where the greetings, Merry Christmas are exchanged.
I was in Vienna one year and attended Christmas Mass at a small neighborhood church..  The priest smiled throughout the service as if he was happy and filled with joy that our Savior had been born.  Will never forget the light in his eyes and the smile on his face.
Pace,
