Dear... It is that time of the year again. Time for college applications, pressures, and anticipations. This only happens once in a lifetime, and I am glad to be able to be participant in this experience. Thank you for agreeing to write a letter of recommendation for me. I hope this letter can help you to understand me a little better and assist the writing process. I have enclosed everything you need --- forms, stamped and addressed envelopes --- in this packet. The colleges to which I am applying to that requires letters of recommendations are: Stanford, CA 94305-3005 November 1, 2002 New York University (NYU) Office of Undergraduate Admission New York, NY 10011-9191 January 15, 2003 My personal goal is, to some extent, as simple as becoming a functional human being.

I am very interested in humanities. Art, English, and literature of all kinds tend to be on top of my favorites list. I get great satisfaction when I sit down and compose the melody of art, or discover the brilliance of literature. Biology acts as a tool I can shared my thoughts with the world. What makes us think' What allows us to dance, to sing, to feel' With science, in the field of Biology, I may be able to find these answers. I just want to share with the world the endless possibilities art can bring. However, I believe the most important goal for me is to stay as myself and proof to the world that I can do something for this society. With my immense amount of interest in the humanities, my professional goals are leaning more toward vocations such as computer animationist, Asian studies, or a biologist. Art will always be part of my life, so why not combine something I love with something I will be working with the rest of my life' Since I was little, cartoons, animations, or any forms of moving pictures have caught my undivided attention. Computers are a certain form of art to me, the way the hardwares are structured, the way it is plastic in its own way under the molding of men, and the way it can bring art to life. Computer animation then seems like a perfect result. I am Asian. http://www.51due.com/writing/more/sample59875.html

I wasn?t born here, but in Taiwan. I moved to California when I was in third grade, without any knowledge of English. I can go on and on about the hardships and obstacles of being submersed into a completely alien environment, but I will not. Why' Because I am thankful for what I have seen here, for what I have done here. Before, I was only aware of one form of language, mandarin. And I was confined to the pond of knowledge. I would not have been able to journey with Odysseus, or act with Shakespeare if I just stayed in Taiwan. Yet, I still feel a tugging connection with my culture. Now that I?ve tasted the fruit of Eastern knowledge, I hope I can go and retrieve my blanket of my identity I?ve left behind ten years ago. Maybe through Asian studies I can achieve that. That is why I?m considering the following majors: East Asian Studies, Studio Art, Cell Biology, and English. I have included an unofficial transcript as a reference.

The highlighted course are the advanced course I?ve taken or am taking. My academic strengths are art, English, and Biology. In art, I am like a fish in water. There is no limits to my imagination. I can do whatever I want. There is no restriction on paper. My true self can be illustrated through colors of emerald, teal, and black. English is art in words. Instead of paints, you take words and draw a whole different world with it. And deep within the world lies meanings, significances, and enlightenment. I enjoy analyzing literatures and most of all, that brief moment of epiphany when I suddenly understand what the writer is trying to say. Biology quenches my curiosity about the world. Through scientific methods I may be able to find the mysteries of life and unveil its mask.

My personal strengths are my willingness to learn and desire to challenge myself. I am not afraid the learn new things. As an immigrant, I realized that the only way for me to survive in a different world is to absorb as much new material as possible, and make it my own. In order to get the experiences and the preparation I need for the future, I tried to take as many advanced courses I can withstand. True, there were times when I just want to lie down and not care about a thing, but I know I have to keep going on to live my life to its fullest. I would like the colleges to which I am applying to know that I am the kind of person who will always be smiling when greeted, always be willing to help, and always ready to take on challenges. I see myself as a girl who?s struggling to make sense of the world around her, while in the meantime enjoying the new opportunities the future brings.

The areas I hope you will discuss in the letter are my deep interest in art, my personalities, and possibly my hopes and goals. I don?t know how many times I have asked you for help, and returned with the answer plus a different world view. I will remember forever the times when you took the very first slide of my bat-winged angel. I think that is what art is all about --- exploring yourself. What I got from the your class is and will be priceless. I won?t trade it for anything else. For your information, I have attached a form listing my academic and extracurricular/volunteer activities/awards. Again, thank you. I know this is a huge time commitment on your part, and I appreciate it.-M
