Now that Globoplay was launched in the US, I guess that will be easier. They have a vast quantity of novelas (since they are the biggest producers of them here anyway) including Avenida Brasil, Cheias de Charme and Rei do Gado. If you're not familiar with the genre, there are also some comedies that are similar to sitcoms (25-30min) like Os Normais (I'm watching it now and it's still great) and some of their original drama series, Assédio, Segunda Chamada, Aruanas. BTW: they remastered O Auto Da Compadecida in its original 4-episode series with some new CGI. I haven't watched it yet but the movie is one of our biggest national treasures and depicts the sertão nordestino so feel free to check it out!
Globoplay is a Brazilian subscription video on-demand over-the-top[1] streaming[2] service owned by Grupo Globo. The service primarily distributes films and television series produced by Estúdios Globo with the service also hosting content from other providers, content add-ons, live sporting events, and video rental and purchasing services. It was created on October 26, 2015, and launched in Brazil on November 3 of the same year.[3] In 2020, it reached the milestone of 20 million registered users and became the most used national streaming service in Brazil.[4]
In September 2021, it was announced that Globoplay would be released in Canada and in more than 20 European countries, such as Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Portugal and United Kingdom starting October 14, 2021.[5][6]
Globoplay offers video streaming or on-demand content of programs from Globo's archived library as well as original programs and exclusive international programs. Live broadcasting of Globo and some of its affiliates is also available, albeit users have to configure their accounts so the location is inside of the allowed broadcasting area, composed of 115 affiliates operating inside 26 Brazilian states. If someone has their account configured to have a location outside of those affiliates, or if it lives outside Brazil and straight doesn't have configured a specific location, the live broadcasting feature automatically becomes unavailable.
In August 2018, it was announced that Globoplay would distribute original content series commissioned by TV Globo exclusively for the service.[8] The first slate of series released that year under the "Globoplay Originals" banner included Além da Ilha, Assédio and Ilha de Ferro.[9][10]
In August 2020, Globo made Premiere available through an exclusive deal (no cable TV needed). In September, announced that all Globosat (now, Canais Globo) channels would become available on the platform even for those without a cable TV deal. The exclusive package guarantees access to all Globoplay and Canais Globo content with the option the buy add-ons like Premiere, Combate and Telecine.
Globoplay has bought exclusive and non-exclusive distribution rights to stream international shows in Brazil.[12] The ABC medical drama television series The Good Doctor was released on August 22, 2018, as the first international exclusive show of the service.[13]
Telenovelas broadcast by TV Globo after 2009 were already available on the service, including those rerunned in the Vale a Pena Ver de Novo programming block. In May 2020, Globoplay launched a project to rescue classic programming from TV Globo's library, with the inclusion of soap operas, miniseries and seasons of Malhação prior to 2010. Since then, every two weeks, a new title has been released for streaming.[14]
Abroad, only Globoplay is available for contracting. Globoplay + live channels is available for contracting and consumption only in Brazil.[15] Despite this, for the international market, the contents and live feeds of the channels Globo Internacional, Multishow, GloboNews, GNT, Viva, SporTV and Premiere are available.[16]
With the launch of Globoplay in Europe, the Globo Internacional satellite/cable feed was discontinued in the continent, except in Portugal where Globo maintains three channels on the air: Globo Portugal, PFC and Globo Now, a repeater of the signal from GloboNews.[17] Programs that are being shown on Portuguese SIC channel will not enter the platform's catalog.[18]
Globoplay is a brand made by Grupo Globo in 2000. Currently, the name is used for a streaming service launched in 2015, which is the second most downloaded streaming service on Brazil. It's very similar to that of Canais Globo (previous Globosat), and is a part of the Rede Globo holding.
With this renaming, the Globo.com video platform was also the Globo and Globosat's Video-on-demand service by means of a paid subscription: globo.tv+, in a first effort to contain the advance of Netflix, which had started in Brazil in 2011.
Unlike the previous initiative, this rebranding had a wide publicity in his debut, and, despite being exclusively for Rede Globo shows, it soon became a major player in the market for streaming services in Brazil.
In order to strengthen its service, due to the increase in the number of competitors in Brazil (like Amazon Prime Video, HBO Go and PlayPlus), Globoplay started to add Globosat shows gradually in its catalog, to acquire films and exclusive foreign productions; and began producing and launch its original productions. Curiously, the rebrand project was provisionally titled Globoflix, alluding to Netflix.
The renaming to Globoplay was made some months before this redesign. The icon and wordmark was revealed in social media and email marketing in August 16, 2018; and one week later, it was officially released on the apps and advertising.
With the introduction of live streaming of pay TV Globo channels and bundles with Telecine, Premiere, Combate and, later, with Disney+ and Apple TV+; Globoplay updates its logo, being the second Globo asset featuring the new Globobrand typeface, as part of the "Uma Só Globo" ("Just one Globo") restructuring.
Disney Plus has signed a joint subscription deal in Brazil with Globoplay, the ambitious and fast-growing SVOD platform of giant Brazilian broadcast group Globo, the biggest media company in Latin America.
Announced Tuesday, the strategic partnership sees Disney Plus being made available for purchase in Brazil by Globoplay via a combined subscription offer for both Globoplay and Disney Plus which comes at a discounted price of R$43.90 ($7.6) a month. The Disney Plus-Globoplay combo offer kicks in on Nov. 3, a fortnight before Disney Plus launches across Latin America, including Brazil, on Nov. 17. Disney Plus has already launched over much of Europe.
The alliance will not see the partners sharing an interface, but it does points to a discount joint subscription partnership model that may become a building trend as even the biggest SVOD players seek to ensure audience reach in a bitterly competitive market.
In another move, Globoplay aims to deliver in the next few months podcast versions of its early morning TV newscasts for use in cars as Brazilians travel to work, said Erick Brêtas, director of digital products & services at Globo.
Anyone who likes to binge Brazilian soap operas has got to love Globoplay. The free streaming service also carries hit international series, original programming created for the platform, reality shows, movies, and even some sports livestreams from the Rede Globo network.
