Greetings Fellow Occupiers and Activists:
Well, tomorrow marks the beginning of the 2013 Legislature. The Governor will make his State of the State address, and then the legislature will spend the rest of the week organizing for the sessions official start on Feb. 4th. Tomorrow's schedule can be found here:
Since all the legislators will be in Salem this week, now is a good time to remind them that we're watching.
Last month's special session allowed the legislature to get a jump on the upcoming session and in addition to the Nike Bill which got all the attention, many other measures surfaced in the Senate Judiciary and House Judiciary Committees. Here are some of them:
LC0907 imposes restrictions on the use of drones in the state. -- a good start, but it doesn't go nearly far enough.
LC0746 says you commit a felony when you engage in 'tumultuous and violent conduct and thereby intentionally or recklessly creates a grave risk of causing public alarm.' It would make most of us felons if we ever 'cause public alarm' with a demonstration of 5 or more people....
LC0305 has its roots in ALEC's 'Castle Doctrine Act' and Florida's 'Stand your ground' law that gained notoriety after the Trayvon Martin murder last year. It allows citizens to use deadly physical force for what amounts to property crimes.
LC2623, heard by the House Judiciary Committee in special session on 12/10/12, Reaffirms woman’s right to make reproductive decisions in Oregon.
As the week progresses, we'll see if there is any other committee business that transpires.
