I think history knowledge on Ahom Kingdom that Manoj possesses is commendable, now we have an idea about Gogoi (like Pradip Gogoi and Tarun Gogoi).

How about Burhagohai and Rajkhowa, like Bhimkanta Burhagohain and Arabinda Rajkhowa?

Thanks,
Rabin

They demanded special recognition and Swargodew allowed them to be called 'Songoi-' or 'songoti'- which over time became 'Gogoi'-due to linguistic corruption." --  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/assamonline/message/4303

Wonderful Manoj and Rabin,

I would also love to know the mystery of PHUKAN's being BRAHMIN or Bamun!! I come across lot many Phukans and before meeting them I was keen to see a gigantic sturctured Chaodang man, but when met them, they were lean people and when asked they say as Bamuns ! LIke Late Bhrigu da- my past friend and so many.

Why I said about Phukan are strong that during my schol days all Police SI used to be either Gogoi or Phukans,Borah or Kalita /Talukdars.Those gogoi/Phukan was live example of Chaodangs !!! Criminals was scared more of them then the sin.

If Manoj could help me to get some Buranjee gyan, this will help me to narrate my tourists too.(me not joking)

thanks.

Liking history has nothing to do with your educational background. Its a hobby and you can collect some books next time you visit Assam and start reading.

I am a production engineer and MBA..has nothing to do with history academically, except the history books upto class-X, where to Assam history was not taught..it was more of Indian history.. its my hobby and interest..and my strong believe that history repeats..so want to see what all are going to get repeated..:)

Wish to hear more.Sadly I was a Geography Hons and History with economics student.....Its a big turning point. But old is Gold. Salute Sir.

Well Dr Das/Rabin,

Nice that you want to know about our past.

Buragohains were the Prime Ministers of Ahom kings..It was hereditory. So if we have anyone with that title today, they are direct descendants of original 'Buragohain' who came down with Sukapha from Shaan province. The king had three main ministers..Buragohain, Borgohain and Borboruah. later Borpatrogohain was added to accomodate Konseng, who was a prince but raised as a Naga warrior. He became one of the most famous generals of Ahoms and was instrumental in annexing large tracts of territory including Dhansiri valley.

Rajkhowas were the officers responsible for the administration of tracts under the royal throne, you can say estate officers.

How we have Brahmin 'Phukons'?

Phukons are above 'hazarika' in hiararchy, and anyone could be appointed depending on the capability. In earlier times it was reserved for tai descendants. The first recorded incidence of a Brahmin being appointed was that of the brother of 'Fuleswaori kunwari'- kalugoinya as pobrotiya phukon.. one can say political officer of the hill tracts.. maheswar porbotiya phukon, who was sent to capture 'Bodon Borphukon' was also a Brahmin.

I am writing these from my memory..(open to correction)..

Dear Manoj, Bikash and Rabin,

I am very glad that the discussion has turned towards knowing our past. Like Manoj said, "history repeats..so want to see what all are going to get repeated".

My interest in history was triggered by the 1962 movie on Lachit Borphukan. With all respect to Director Sarbeswar Chakrabarty, and with all the admiration that they really came forward to make a movie on Lachit in those financially difficult days, it must be admitted that certain things shown in that movie could not be correct --- but I could not say a word, because I knew nothing about the history of Assam. History was a subject in my high-school education, but that was history of Delhi and England, not much about Assam. My father was well versed in history of Assam, and we heard some stories from him at home, not as a subject at school. Later, I went to study engineering at IIT Kharagpur and I got completely disconnected with our past.

After watching the 1962 movie on Lachit Borphukan, I grabbed a copy of History of Assam by Edward Gait (the original 1905 version, not the one edited/distorted by Birinchi Barua later) and was amazed to see the past of our land. I found my father's collection of a few books gifted to him by his friend --- the famous Dr. Surya Kumar Bhuyan. My next job was to go to Lawyer's Book Stall in Panbazar where the salesman, Mr. Patangia took me to the backroom where a huge pile of history books recorded by Dr. Bhuyan were collecting dust for want of purchasers.

In my study of the Assam history books, I was very lucky to have a partner, the late Debendra Nath Acharya. We read the books together --- imagining how the country looked like in the past, how people talked, dressed, walked, joked, worked in the paddy fields, boat factories (nao-shal), iron factories (kamar-shal), saltpeter extraction plants (kharghar), fought battles ----

When I left India in 1973, I gave my collection of history books to Acharya and requested him to write a book.

He did. In 1976, he published the first version of his immortal creation "Kal Purush."

In 1981, he came to the USA for medical treatment and gifted me a copy of his book. I read it in one sitting, and asked him: "Like Thomas Paine's book "Common Sense" that precipitated America's 1776 War of Independence from Britain, did your "Kal Purush" trigger "Asom Andolan" in 1979?"

Acharya remained silent for several minutes. So did I. We broke our silence by sharing how we felt about the forces of history. When Mukul Mahanta in 2005 quoted Henry Ford "History is bunk" they obviously missed some deep feelings.

History repeats. We must analyze and try to avoid making the same mistakes. ULFA has made terrible mistakes. Those mistakes should be corrected. At the same time, we can verily draw our strength from our achievements in the past. That's why I wrote that article "ATAN BURAGOHAIN SAKO" --- not for crossing a river --- it will take us across three centuries of Time to fill our heart with hope, glory, self-confidence, self-sacrifice and a strong determination.

I request everybody to give me their comments/questions about this article. I'll write again once I have the questions. I already have one question from Rabin which I'll reply later.

With love to everybody,

Himendra

Hi Himendrada

History is the end result of collective actions-reactions of humankind over periods of time. Although thousands of dynasties/kings ruled the earth, only a few stand out. Gaits have mentioned about the 'sleepy hollow' of the Brahmaputra valley. Thats a living example of history getting repeated. I have no idea about what "Ford' said.

Kumar Bhaskara Barman was probably the greatest king Assam had. He was a bridge between 'Kamrupa' and Harsha's North Indian Empire. In India there is no chapter on Assam's history, which is fairly authentic. Thats another way of not recognizing Assam. We have written many times to NCERT to make it a part of history syllabus, nothing is being done so far.

Also I was disgusted to see that Google doesn't recognize Assamese as a language; whereas there are odd entries like 'Bihari' and 'Naga' languages. I wrote once to them citing wikipedia statistics that its the 52nd largest language in the world with 13 million speakers. They have not moved an inch.

Govt. of Assam has given consultancy assignment to RITES (Rail India Technical & Engg Services) to do the DPR for the 5th Bridge over Brahmaputra near Uzan Bazar. I think this bridge can become "Atan Buragohain Setu".

Warm regards,
-manoj

Thank you, Bikash ! We should be able to be grateful to stalwarts like General SK Sinha who did so much for Lachit. I mentioned that in my article ATAN BURAGOHAIN SAKO (attached again), where I also wanted to thank Queen Mother of Jaipur who saved Assam from the second invasion by Ram Singh. I'll be very grateful if everyone reads the article

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/assamonline/files/misc/as.doc

and asks the most pointed quesion:

Why the Battle of Saraighat is one of the top battles in the world history ???

"Compared to the Battle of Saraighat, even Napoleonic battles appear to be crude cannonade. In his tactics to outsmart the Mughal cavalry, Shivaji used hideouts in the hills. Lachit connected the natural hills by man-made earth ramparts. Shivaji defeated the enemy mostly by surprise attacks, an option not available at Saraighat. Similar to Alexander's battles, in Saraighat, a small army defeated a much larger army by using rivers, swamps, forests, moats, hills and every bit of the contour of the terrain, skillfully deploying all possible natural assets including Time".

My efforts will be rewarded if younger generations realize the reality.

With warm greetings,
Himendra

Some People find it fashionable to disregard History. During my hostel days i had seen people poking fun at History students as if History was a worthless subject. ( i could never join the fun although i was in science!). i wonder if those people are contributing something better to the society than the History students now.

I remember, during the 1st AGP Govt. History was replaced from the school syllabus. i wonder if it was influenced by some vested interests to prevent future uprisings of the Assamese (one of which was just concluded that time!).

I feel somebody (sensitive enough to understand the situation) should write a History about the Bangladeshi immigration to Assam. People should know how it all started (was it initially due to Bengal Division ??) and later on orchestrated by Bhashani & Sadulla and after Independece by Vote hungry Politicians!

People should know how Indira-Mujib accord affected it (how whims of a few affects entire State/Nation), how IMDT was brought and how People on Power did nothing about IMDT while they could!

Well written by Mr Shantikam Hazarika!

Now itself we find difficulties while young generations unaware of how many types of Bihu being celebrated and in which Assamese months???

70% doesnot know and netierh wanted to know as they live away from Assam.

Hope Lachit,Gopinath Bordoloi or what today we do write here will go alongwith us only.

AGP/AASU/ULFA etc ruined what was left over. The famous social system of Assam nowhere exist now.

Wish wre could remake the great Xonar Axom Buranjee again.

Somehow I got this writing of Lt Gen SK Sinha, the first General rank officer of Indian Army to resign when his junior was made General. But this Bihari NDA officer is always in high praise for Lachit and the bravery of Assams forgotten hero's.

This link will tell- http://www.hvk.org/articles/0801/92.html
Might be this why he always favoured as well Indian Army follow Lachit technique in NDA training.Lt Gen Sinha's love for Assam is memorable. He discovered my father veteran freedom fighter Pani Ram Das(93 yrs old) as real existing hero and so he has been getting heroic welcome by Army for lot many celebrations that no civilian does.Patharughatar ronn celebration started by this Lt Gen.
What about Gohai Kamal?Dhodar Ali? Jongal Balahu? How Mahapurux Sankardeb crossed mighty Brahmaputra by walk in knee deep water when he was chased by Koch king? But same time all the soldiers drowned!!! Harisinga: at present Udalguri Dist....Hari(Krishna) played war tone through his Xinga at this place. So called as Hari Xinga(Now Harisinga). My birthplace Kalaigaon: the birth place of Kendu kalai, head priest of Ma Kamakhya. When Kamakhya slapped him, his head fell down at "Mura Deor" 6 miles north near Kabir ali.The temple still exists in pathetic condition. The gigantic Daa was of course, looted by then bodoland agitating people(God save them now).Kalaigaon reamined a place of religious harmony. The jyotixis were famous. I wish all could contribute from their respoective village tales and we could make a new chapter.Might be my web site will get converted one fine day as a big history of assam that never written before!
We need collect lot and write up as it was.India will not think of us.We need to do for our own sake that there was real fighters than cowards.

Long ago I did wrote about how Koch and Ahom kings used Nahar seed as light ups house, palace and as firing weapon on the tip of arrow.I too learnt this technique in my childhood from my fathers village which exists since 622 BC.This making technique is highly interesting.(When I did joined Air Force in 1982, by 1983 CRPF raided and took my big bow and arrow....) The art of making bow and arrow is also amazing. Its not made simply.Sky star pattern helps to do all.. I did that.I hope someone from Maharaja bonxo will tell better- our lost history. The golden days.
