I've started working on py3k compatibility (again) and I'm feeling the
pain of keeping code compatible with 2.5. When, if ever, is 2.5
support going to be dropped?

Can we do a quick survey of other projects? My intuition is that it's normal to drop 2.5 support when picking up 3.x support. If that's a good intuition then I'm fine following suit.

How about a quick + *crappy* survey? :-D

Using PyPI classifier search:

- Tagged with Python 2.5 and Python 3: 327
- Tagged with Python 2.6 and Python 3: 932
- Tagged with Python 2.7 and Python 3: 1053

So, of Python 2.7 packages that also support Python 3:

 - 88% also support 2.6
 - 31% also support 2.5

Another thing to consider: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS runs through 2015:

Thankfully, in 10.04 "the default Python (i.e. /usr/bin/python) is 2.6 and Python 2.7 is not officially supported or available. Python 3.1 is available for Lucid, but not installed by default." (I tried verifying this with a virtual machine and failed. Anyone have easy access to 10.04 to verify?)

Phew. :-)

Incidentally, Ubuntu has a great page on Python 3:

+1 from me for dropping 2.5.

I succeeded. I am indeed seeing 2.6 on 10.04. Full steam ahead! :)
